MOLID'ERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1916.
Application filed April 27', 1916. Serial No. 93,915.
To all '20 7mm it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. JEN- NINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Molders Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools used in foundry work to repair imp rfections in sand molds, and particularly to add mold material to replace portions broken away from corners of the molds.
The invention is embodied in a tool or slicker adapted to bear simultaneously on two faces of a sand mold, and to carry a small body or mass of the mold material to a corner break in the continuity of the mold, and restore the continuity of the corner by a single movement or operation.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 8 is a section indicated by line 7-7 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section indicated by line 8-8 of Fig. 2. Figs. 5
and 6 are perspective views of a second embodiment of my invention. Fig. 7 is a section indicated by line 1l11 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section indicated by line 12-12 of Fig. 6. Figs. 9 and 10 are perspective views of a third embodiment of my invention. F ig. 11 is a section indicated by line 1515 of Fig. 10. Fig. 12 is a section indicated by line 16-16 of Fig. 10.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.
According to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tool comprises a handle 28 and an angular blade having a portion 25 the operating surface of which is convex throughout its length, and a cooperative portion 26 the operating surface of which is substantially flat. This tool is particularly well adapted for mending a break at the junction of a concave portion of a mold with a substantially flat portion at approximately right angles thereto, the concave surface of the mold being slicked by the convex face of the blade and the flat surface of the mold being meanwhile guarded against distortion during the process; or the plane surface may be slicked by the flat blade portionand the concave surface be preserved by the convex blade portion. When the edge of the mold is badly broken away, a small mass of mold material may be caused to adhere to the blade at the junction of the under surface of portion 25 and the adjoining surface of the portion 26, and such material may be wiped into position to form an integral part of the mold, the concave and flat surfaces being slicked simultaneously.
It will be apparent that the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is primarily for slicking molds wherein the concave portion is nearer the point of access. It will also be apparent that the form shown by Figs. 5 and 6 (which is provided with a fiat blade portion 25 and a convex blade portion 26 is adapted for repairing or slicking a mold at the junction of a flat surface and a concave surface when th flat surface is nearer Elie point of access than is the concave surace.
The embodiment shown by Figs. 9 and 10 is chiefly distinguished from the form shown by Figs. 5 and 6 by the position of the handle. The position of the handle may in some cases be determined by the preference of the workman, but in other cases its location is determined by the requirements of certain classes of work.
The form shown by Figs. 9 and 10 would be more advantageous than that shown in Figs. 5 and 6 if the workman were repairing, for instance, a mold arranged for casting a cylindrical object having an annular flange midway its length, the more remote mold shoulder defining the junction of the c'ylinder and flange being the part requiring slicking or repairing.
I claim:
1. A molders tool comprising an angular blade having two divergent cooperative portions one of which has a longitudinally convex slicking face, the bulge of said convex face being in the general direction of the free end of the cooperative blade-portion, and a handle for the blade.
2. A molders tool comprising an angular blade having tWo divergent cooperative porportion having the flat operating face, and tions one of which has a longitudinally cona handle for the blade. veX operating face and the other of Which In testimony whereof I have aflixed my has a substantially flat operating face, the signature.
5 bulge of said convex face being in the general direction of the free end of the blade- WILLIAM F. JENNINGS.
