ADJUSTABLE BRUSH-GRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
Application filed August 27, 1917. Serial No. 188,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR D. MARBLE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Waterloo, in the county of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brush-Grips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to painters adjustable grips to be used in connection with paint brush handles.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which eliminates the strain upon the forefingers, wrist and arm of the user, and enables him to use his whole hand to grip the brush instead of the forefingers and thumb.
Another object of my invention is to. provide a device of the above mentioned character, the use of which will prolong the life of an ordinary paint brush and will produce the same-results quicker and with more ease.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which can be changed from one brush handle to another immaterial of either size or shape.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, and efficient in practice and may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the description, and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 shows the device attached to the handle of a paint brush.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device, parts thereof being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the jaws.
gig. 4 is a side view of the co-acting aw an Fig. 5 is an end view of the slidable sleeve.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1, desi nates any kind of a paint brush which is provided with the usual handle 2. The bifurcated curved jaw 3 of my device is provided upon its inner end with a threaded, axially extending shank 4. Intermediate to this jaw and said shank, is a cut-away portion 5, adapted to receivethe reduced portion 6 of the co-acting jaw 7. The jaw 7 is provided with a curved tongue which fits in the bifurcation of jaw 3 when they co-act. The jaws are pivoted together by means of a rivet 8 or other suitable means. A sleeve 9 is arranged to slide upon the inner ends of the aws andis provided with a bifurcated outer-end 10. The inner end of this sleeve is adapted to abut with the end of the han dle 11. The bifurcated portion of the sleeve 9 forms two tapered fingers, which taper back upon their inner surface to the axial opening in the rear end of this sleeve. The outer ends 10 of the bifurcation of the sleeve 9, are concaved in a plane parallel to the jaws proper, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2 and are so constructed to facilitate brushes having smaller handles to be gripped between the aws. Since the bifurcated portion 10 permits the sleeve 9 to slide well toward the outer ends of the jaws, it will be seen that the concave portions 10 will be arranged in close proximity to the outer ends of the jaws, to engage one side of a brush handle. The handle of my adjustable grip is provided with an axial opening 12, and intermediate the ends of this opening is a larger opening 13, adapted to hold a nut 14:, snugly therein, in order that the nut may turn with the handle.
To attach the grip to a paint brush handle, the handle of my grip is screwed back until the jaws of the same are in open position. The jaws are then placed around the brush handle 2, and the handle 11 is screwed in the opposite direction to rotate the nut 14 in order to move the handle and the sleeve 9, toward the outer ends of the jaws. By this operation the jaws are forced into clamping engagement with the handle of the brush. This grip is grasped by the handle as though it were a hammer, and is used advantageously in stenciling, varnishing, decorating and house-cleaning.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and the various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts will be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A. brush grip comprising a handle, a
pair of pivoted jaws connected with said handle and having their outer ends substantially semi-circular, the outer end of one of said jaws being bifurcated, the end of the co-acting aw being provided with a tongue adapted to be received in the bifurcated end of said first named jaw and means for operating said jaws.
2. An adjustable brush grip comprising a handle having a bore therethrough, a nut secured in said bore and havino its threaded opening registering with the bore through the handle, a jaw, said jaw being provided with a threaded shank extending through the bore in the handle and the nut, a second jaw cooperating with the first jaw to form a substantially oval opening when the jaws are closed, said second jaw having a shank pivotally connected to the first named jaw, and a slidable sleeve surrounding said jaw shanks between the handle and the jaws proper, said sleeve having its inner end abutting with said handle and its outer end concaved in a plane parallel to the jaws proper to abut with a brush handle, and the outer end of said sleeve being bifurcated in a plane parallel to the jaws proper to receive portions or the jaws proper therein whereby the outer concaved end of said sleeve moves entirely across the opening formed by the two,- jaws when they are in a closed position to grip brush handles of various sizes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence cf two witnesses.
OSCAR D. MARBLE.
