IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR IGNITING GAS-JETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,363, dated July 16, 1872.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE'W. PARKE and J AMES G. STowE, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lighters; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for igniting gas-lights, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make I attached the igniter B by means of the pin 0,

having confined in its head the spring D. F is a smaller tube, havinga straight slot through its entire length, and of a size to admit the follower G, the follower-pin H passing through said slot. I is a cam attached to the tube F.

When in their respective positions, as seen in Fig. 1, and the match inserted in the tube F, by turning the thumb-nut K half round the inner tube F is made to revolve, causing the follower G to rise in the tube F, (the followerpin H passing into the spiral groove in tube A,) say, one-eighth of an inch, and projecting the match the same distance from the tube F. At the same time the cam I is caused to rub against a pin in the under side of the igniter B, pushing the igniter to the extreme length of the cam, when, after leaving the pin, the igniter, by the force of the spring D, is thrown against and across the match, igniting the same.

This device may be attached to any-size gasburner by the coupling X, attached to an exterior casing, Z, the screw Y regulating it to the size burner used.

Having thus fully described our invention,

what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The combination of the spirally-slotted tube A, longitudinallyslotted tube F, with thumb-nut K and the follower G, provided with pin H projecting through the slots of the tubes A F, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the swinging igniter B with pin a and spring D, and the cam I operating against the pin a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

3. The within-described gas-lighting device, consisting of .the exterior casing Z with holder X, slotted tubes A F, follower G with pin H, thumb-nut K, cam I, and igniter B with pin a and spring D, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
