GAS-BURN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,002, dated September 22, 1896.
Application led January 9, 1895.

Be it known that I, HENRY SEWALL, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the city of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Gas- Burners; and I do hereby declare that the fol- -lowing is a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a compound or convertible burner whereby either a heating or an illuminating flame may be produced; and the invention consists of the combination of a jet-piece or ordinary burner and an enlargedhinged tube adapted to fold up and form an extension of the said iirst tube and be held in place by a springcatch and to fold down out of the way when not in use.
It also consists of certain details of construction, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents an elevation of my new compound gas-burner, showing the Bunsen attachment in the position it assumes when in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the position the Bunsen burner assumes when the ordinary burner is used for 'illuminating purposes; and Fig. 3 is a view showing the burner attachment hinged to a` spring chuck or socket adapted to grip an ordinary jet tube or burner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
A represents an ordinary j et-piece of a gasburner, and tube B the Bunsen attachment. The lava tip et projects slightly within the tube B when the latter is in place. The tube B is hinged to the jet-piece A at d and is adapted to fold down out of place, as shown in Fig. 2, and to be held in its upright position, as shown in Fig. 1, by the spring-catch c. The tube B is open at its ends, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or provided with suitable ports 0:, as shown in Fig. 3, for the admission of air to mix with the gas before ignition,
and forms, essentially, an ordinary Bunsen Serial No. 534,297. (No model.)
burner. At the upper part of the tube B, I secure a clip or catch E, whereby instruments may be held while heating.
The burner justdescribed is intended to take the place of ordinary gas burners. Vhen it is desired to use the gas for illuminating purposes, the Bunsen tube B is simply turned down on its hinge into the position shown in Fig. 2 and allowed to remain there until it is desired to use the flame for heating, when it is very readily turned up by hand to the position shown in Fig. 1, where it is held by the spring-catch c. It will thus be seen that my device is extremely simple of construction and convenient of operation, and it will be found especially useful in heating such articles as curling-tongs and the like in a bed-room, which will not become blackened by the Bunsen flame employed. As shown in Fig. 3, the Bunsen tube is hinged to a .tubular chuck which lits over an ordinary gas-burner. 0 This chuck is conveniently made to tightly grip the burner by making longitudinal' slits c c through its lower end.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A convertible gas-burner consisting of the combination of a jet-burner and a single tube having an air-inlet and a means connected to the burner and flexibly connected to the tube, whereby the burner may be used either as a luminous or a heating burner without detaching the parts from each other.
2. The attachment for gas-burners shown and described, the same comprising a chuck or tubular base-piece adapted to be set over and embrace the body of an ordinary jetburner, and a tube having an air-inlet iieXibly connected therewith and adapted to be brought into position over the jet-burner and to be folded to one side and out of the way when not in use without removing the chuck or base-piece.
