UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK PERRY, 0F TIPTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOB T0 INDUSTRIAL INVENTIONS LIMITED, 0]? TIPTON, STAFFORD, ENGLAND.
IN CAN DESGEN T GAS-LIGH'IIN Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
Application filed January 18, 1919. Serial No. 271,799.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PERRY, residing at 68 Dudley road, Tipton, in the county of Stafford, England, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Incandescent Gas-Lighting, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to incandescent gas lighting, and has for its object to construct improved inexpensive means whereby a small light can be obtained.
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the front and Fig. 2 a like view showing the rear of an illuminating device constructed in accordance with this invention.
In carrying the invention into eflect as shown a burner a fitted with a steatite tip and having a small orifice is used, the burner delivering only a small quantity of gas at full pressure. The burner is one of very small size giving a bats-wing, rat-tail or other like flame. For example a burner consuming one-third to one-half a cubic foot of coal gas per hour is sufficient. When supplied with gas at full ordinary town pressure such a burner gives a non-luminous flame without previous admixture with air. At a convenient distance in front of the burner, which is preferably arranged horizontally, is secured a flat or other piece of refractory mesh b of similar material to that used in the usual cylindrical mantles, the plane of the refractory mesh being preferably at right angles to the axis of the topics of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the burner. This refractory material may be rectangular or circular in shape and is preferably flat or nearly flat. The refractory material is carried on a metal frame 0 constructed from thin sheet or strip and having its edges turned over to grip the edges of the refractory material. Integrally with the frame is a connecting stem 0? having one end shaped to form a slotted cylindrical gripping piece 6 which can fit over and grip the cylindrical body of the burner. The burner flame impinges on the back of the refractory material and raises the same to incandescence.
An illuminating device as above described is capable of giving sufficient light for many domestic and other purposes. Also it can readily be fitted to any standard gas fitting which will take an ordinary bats-wing or like burner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An illuminating device comprising in combination a small gas burner from which the gas issues without previous admixture of air, a flat piece of refractory mesh, a light sheet metal frame having its edges bent over to grip the mesh, a stem formed integral with the frame, and a slotted cylindrical gripping piece formed with the stem and adapted to grip the body of the burner, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
. FRANK PERRY.
