UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIoE.
.WIN SLOW H. GILMAN, OF FARMINGTON, N. H., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH OF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN AND DAVID IV. HITOHOOOK, OF BOSTON, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,333, dated July 16, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Shoes, invented by WINsLOW H. GIL- MAN, residing at Farmington, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire.
This invention relates to that class of shoes the uppers of which are composed of a single piece of leather with the seam upon one side; and my improvement consists in cutting an oblong pointed piece out of the heel and then stitching the edges of the slot thus formed together, for the purpose. of making a snug-fit around the heel and ankle.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved upper. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the flap turned back and the tongue turned out. Fig. 3 shows the slot in the heel before the edges are stitched together.
The same letters of reference are employed in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.
The upper A consists of a single piece of leather cut to the form, and shaped as required, in the ordinary manner, after which the ends are sewed together along the line a, the seam being located upon one side of the upper. In
the example illustrated the slit through which the foot enters the shoe is covered by a large flap, B, which is stitched to one edge of the slit, and provided with a strap, b, to fasten onto a buckle, O, on the upper, and the usual tongue D, sewed to the other edge of the slit, and used to aid in excluding dirt. This portion of the upper may be constructed in any other preferred or required manner. To make that portion of the upper covering the heel and extending up around the ankle snugly fit those parts, I "take in the leather in the back of the heel by cutting out a piece, forming a slot similar to that shown in Fig. 3, and then stitching the edges of the slot together in manner to form a flat seam E.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shoe, the upper A of which is composed of a single piece of leather, cut and sewed together at E in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in presence of two subscribing witncsses this 19th day of February, A. D. 1872.
