c.j1TscHNER. Y NEWEI POST. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 8. |918.
Patented Jan. 21,1919.
"UNITEDn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES ITSCHNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF To FRANKLIN r.
' SMITH, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NEWEL-POST.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
Original application filed May 17, 1917, Serial No. 167,639. Divided and this application filed February 8, 1918. Serial No. 215,953.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES ITSCHNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in N ewel-Posts, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to newel posts and its principal Object is to provide a simple, strong and substantial sheet metal newel post. The subject matter of this application has been divided out of a prior application for patent on Stairway filed by me May 17, 1917, Serial No. 167,639. The invention consists in several novel features of con struction and arrangement, a description of which will be found in the following specication, and the essential features of which will be more definitely pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification iii which:
Figure 1, is a vertical, longitudinal section through a stairway and landing, showing a simple embodiment of the present invention in side elevation; Fig. 2, is a vertical section through the post taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3, is a horizontal section through the post taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to said drawing, the reference character 8, designates a landing of a stairway and 9, designates the stairway proper. These parts may be made in accordance with any of the well known stairway constructions, and the stairway shown and described in my prior application will serve for the purpose of illustration.
The newel post is seen at l0, and is fastened to the stairway in any suitable manner. The newel post comprises a plurality of vertical sheet metal members 27, which form the sides of the post, and said sheet metal members are arranged around a common center, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. Their edge portions are bent along vertical lines to form fianges 28, that project into the hollow space formed by the side members 27, and said flanges converge toward each other; likewise, the flanges of the adjacent side members converge toward each other as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. The adjacent members are spaced apart, and coredge portions spaced apart from other adner molding strips 29, are placed in the spaces between the flanges 28. Each molding strip has two converging faces 26, that are parallel with, and bear against the outer faces of the adjacent flanges 2S. On the inside of the post are a plurality of metal clips 30, which have diverging end portions 32, that are parallel with, and bear against the inner faces of the flanges 28. Screws 31, extend through the corner molding strips 249, and clips 30, and by tightening up the screws the flanges 28, of the side members become tightly gripped between the molding strips 29, and clips 30. Because of the angular relation between the flanges 28, the side members are fixedly secured together by the molding strips, clips and screws, when the latter are screwed up tight, and it is obvious that the side members cannot be removed from the corner moldings until the clips have been detached therefrom sufficiently to permit the withdrawal of the flanges 28, from the space between the mold ing strips and diverging end portions 32, of the clips 30.
Conveniently, the top and bottom of the post may be covered by ornamental caps 11, and a rod, 12, threaded, at eac-h end, may be secured to said caps for holding them permanently in position upon the ends of the post.
More or less variation of the exact details of construct-ion is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend in the following claims to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
I claim as new, Letters Patent:
1. A newel post, comprising a plurality o-f angularly disposed sheet metal sides, arranged around a common center with their and desire to secure by jacent edge portions to leave spaces therebetween, said edge portions being bent toward the interior of the post and those of each side converging toward each other and those of adjacent sides converging toward each other, ornamental corner strips extending in said spaces throughout the full length of the post and having two angularly disposed faces bearing against the edge portions of the sides, and clamping means for clamping 110 said ornamental corner strips against said edge portions.
2. A nevvel post, comprising a plurality of angularly disposed sheet metal sides, arranged around a common center With their edge portions spaced apart from other adjacent edge portions to leave spaces therebetween, said edge portions being bent toward the interior of the post and those of each side converging toward each other, and those of adjacent sides converging toward each other, ornamental corner strips extending in said spaces throughout the full length of the post and having tivo angularly disposed aces bearing against the edge portions of the sides, clips on the inside of the post having diverging portions bearing against the inner faces of the edge portions of the sides, and means for clamping said ornainental corner strips upon the edge portions of said sides. i
3. A nevvel post, comprising a plurality Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the of flat, angularly disposed sheet metal sides, arranged around a common center with their edge portions spaced apart Jfrom other adjacent edge portions to leave spaces therebetween, said edge portions being bent toward the interior of the post and those of each side, converging toward each other, and those of adjacent sides converging "toward each other, ornamental corner stripsV extending in said spaces throughout the full length of the post and each having tvvo converging faces bearing against the outer edge p0rtions of said sides, clips in the interior of the post having diverging bearing faces bearing against the inner faces of the edge portions of said sides and screws for connecting said ornamental corner strips and clips and for securing the edge portions of said sides lbetween said ornamental corner strips and clips.
