Bei-akamu am i, A' "am afneemt,-
a'fcitizen'. oflthe United States, residing at Chicago, in" theco'unty of Cook and .State of. Illinois, have ,invented` certain 4new ,and
useful Improvements in Music-Roll! Car tons,"of .which the iffollowing is a specifi.-v cation.' f'
` IThis inventionirelates tvo-:improvements inv cartons, and has reference' more particularly to that, class of cartons used to contain music rollsyl'or selflplaying instruments, such as playerfplanos.
The boX'es or in which'these iriusic rolls are usually stored or led when not in use are frequently placed in superposed rows in a cabinet or rack, and, in order to get at any particular desired roll, it is often Vnecessary to first withdraw from the cabinet endwise, and it has further been proposed to provide an attachment to the end cover which, through engagementiwiththe spool of the roll, acts to partially withdraw the latter as the cover is opened. My present invention relates to this latter class or ty e of cartons, and has for its principal o ject to provide a cover-actuated roll-withdrawing device characterized by greater simplicity, efficiency and economythan those at present known. Another object is to provide a device of such a character that the weight of the music roll, when in the carton, will hold the cover or lid in closed position. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be readily understood and appreciated bv those skilled in the art from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated a practical and approved embodiment of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a Vvertical longitudinal section, showing a music roll in the carton, and with the cover closed;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, broken oil' at therear end, and showing the cover open and the music roll partly withdrawn;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical lorgitudinal section showing a metal hinge; an f Fig. 4 is a front elevation of Fig. 3.

p Specification of Letisersgeteilt.` j Y Patented, Jan;
` Referring ito '3 the Ydrawing, 5 designates l' the rectangular body-'of` the' carton,'fand' 6 designates the end'cover orlid that is at# tached atl its'lower edge totliefo'rward edge 60 of`the1bottom Wall of the bodyby a hinge me1nber'7 (Figsiv 1and2) of'c'loth, leather o'r'like flexiblel material.`l 8 ,designates'the body and 9 v'the heads of a Spool on whichis wound thefmusic recordsheet 10.Y 65
Attached. to the innerf'side ofthe cover 6 by one orniore rivets'11,'which also secure the hinge member 7 to lthe cover, is the shank 12 ofA a.. short inwardly extending hook 12 that,'. when the music roll is in place 7o in the carton and the cover is closed, engages behind and beneath the peripheral. edge of the lhead 9 of the spool that lies adjacent `to the cover 6. in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1. Secured by a rivet 13 to the outer side of thecover, preferably adjacent to and projecting beyond its upper free edge, is a pulling tab 14. When the cover is opened by pulling outwardly and downwardly on the tab Y14, the so roll is partly withdrawn by the hook 12 to a position in which it may be readily grasped by the hand and completely withdrawn, leav ing the empty carton in its original position in the cabinet or rack. When the music roll is replaced t0 the position shown in Fig. 2, and the cover is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, the weight'of the forward end of the roll,
Vresting on the hook 12, holds the cover in closed position in an obvious manner.
The modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 differs from the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 only in employing a metallic hinge in lieu of a cloth or like flexible one-piece hinge member. Here 15 and 16 designate the two leaves of the hinge secured to the cover and body by rivets 17 and 18 respectively, and jointed b v the usual hinge-pin or pintle 19; and
20 designates the spool-engaging hook vthat 100 may be attached to or formed integral with the hinge-leaf 15. In both of the constructions shownY it will be observed that the spool-engaging hook is rigidly secured to the cover and necessarily partakes of the Y angular movements of the latter in openving and closing.
It is believed that the structure, mode of use, and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the foregoing description and the accompanying illustration. Detail changes t. Copies of' this patent iney b e obtained for may of course be nitide-without "substz ijntially"` altering the structural principle or lessen-` ing the practical utility of the device; andV Within the spiritv and purview of the appended claims.
I claim: y 1.
