Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
Original application filed December 20, 1917, Serial N o. 208,047. Divided and this application filed April 29,
` f 1918. Serial No. 231,477.. 'I
To all/whom t may concern.'
Be-Iit known that I, y(1H/ARLES M. DRINK- WATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and luseful Improvements in `Ash Sifting Apparatus, of which the following is a speciiication.` `l j;
My presentlinvention pertains to ash sifting' and `analogous apparatus, and is designed more particularly, though not necessarily,
for embodiment in the apparatus constituting the subject of my contemporary application Ifiled December- 20, 1917, 'SerialNumber 268,047of which' thisapplication is a divi- Slon.. p v. j
One of the objects ofthe present'invention is theY provision ofy an ash-sifting or analogous apparatus in whichfthej throat usually employed to support a dust-confining valve isY joined'tolthebodyon which it is mounted in such manner that the escape of dust between the two is absolutely precluded.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an ash-sifterbody susceptible of beingexpeditiouslyand easily knocked down. or taken apart so as to occupy but small coin'-y y pass in storage or shipment, and one adapted to be as readily set up with its parts joined in such manner that it is ready for efficient use, and this without the employment of skilled labor.
Other objects and advantageous features of the present invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of so much of an ash-sifting apparatus as is necessary to illustrate the preferred -application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a portion of the apparatus.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
My present invention is preferably, though not necessarily, embodied in an ash-sifting apparatus, and in addition to a throat 1 for supporting a flaring mouth 2 and a dust-conning valve 4 or the like, the apparatus comprises a body 12 on which the throat is su-` perimposed. In' the present and preferred embodiment of the invention there is an inclinedsifting screen 13 in the body, a vertically-slidable door 14 disposed in guides at theforward end of the ybody for the convenient removal of cinders from the forward portion of the body bottom, a baie plate 15 disposed at approximate right angles to the screen 13 and in spaced relation to the lower end thereof, a compartment 16 below the screen and isolated from a. cinder compartment 17 by a transverse wall 18, and a drawer 19 designed to receive ashes and having handles 20`and 21 at its opposite ends; said drawer l.being removable through an opening in .the forward wall of body 12 and being anged, as indicated b-y22, to effectually close said opening when th position to receive ashes.. i
The lower end of the throat lisl provided with loop-flanges 23 that straddle the upstanding wall portions about the induction e drawer is in orice of the body 12. Thus the throat is l supportedon the body in such 'manner that theV oint between the two is broken and the escapeof dust precluded, and yet the throat may when necessity arises be readily lifted oli the body and as readily replaced thereon.
Thev side walls 24 of the body 12 are provided on their upper edges with inwardlydirected flanges 25, Figs. 3 and 4, and the -top wall 26 is interlocked with said flanges 25, as indicated by 27 to break joints between the parts, strongly connect the same, and lend rigidity and strength to the body as a whole, as well as to permit of the wall 26 being drawn out of engagement with the walls 24 when it is desired to ship or store the body in a knock-down state. At its lower end the wall 26 is interlocked with the upper end of the baiiie plate 15, as indicated by 28, Fig. 1, and at its upper end said wall 26 is interlocked with an upstanding wallv dust-proof broken joint manner, and yet of interlockedjoints 33 for 'dust-proof and,v strength-lend,ingl purposes. .as well as :to per.; mit of the frontwall being readilydra'wn,
out of engagement with the side walls for knock-,down purposes,.whi le thescreen 13 is bolted to thesidewalls 24, as indicated by', 34, the baffleplatel and wall 18 arealso'.;` bolted to said kside walls, as. indicated ,by- g 35 and 36, respectively, thelwall :18,is bol`ted',.v to thel screen 13,` as indicated by 37, andthe:`v said screenkis bolted .to the frontwall 32. as indicated by. 38. Manifestlytwhenithel, said bolts are removed, the .bodywallsfmay ,y be disassembled :in themannerv before indi-v cated for vthe i purposes. described, and Y when the said `walls are relatively vvarranged and`r engaged in the setting vup, of thebody and.` the bolts 4arevplaced and secured in position..
a rigid and strongbodykwill be produced..
When dee1nedeXpedient jtheifscreen 13 may be mounte slipped position, as lwhen it isl desired replace a worn-out screen ywith a new one.
