SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,847, dated September 11, 1883. Application filed March 5, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. HiawsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bur lington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal and Ash Sifters and Ido declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in coal and ash sifters; and it consists in a coalsifter comprising suitable screens, partitions, and ash-receptacles provided with tilting bottoms, and a single drawer, the parts being arranged and combined to operate as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient arrangement of screens and coal and ash receptacles, by which the coal may be screened and removed,while the ashes are temporarily retained for subsequent removal, without enlarging the size or in creasing the expense of the construction of the sifter.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coal and ash sifter. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, one side being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of my invention.
A represents the outside case of the sifter, provided with an opening, B, in the top, to receive the coal'and ashes to bescreened. I) is the door which closes the opening B. O and D are inclined screens, the former extending from the front edge of the opening 13 diagonally downward to within a short distance of the latter, which also inclines downward in the opposite direction nearly to the top of the drawer E at the bottom of the case A. A solid partition, G, running parallel with the screen D, extends from the bottom of the screen 0 to the tilting bottom H, which is located above the lower edge of the screen D, and extends horizontally across to the front of the case A, and forms the bottom of the upper ash-receptacle, I. The lower end of the screen D is attached to the solid partition J, which extends downward at right angles with the screen sufficiently far to direct the ashes which fall through this screen onto the tilting bottom K, which forms the bottom of the lower ash-receptacle, L.. The tilting bottoms H and K, be-
ing pivoted at each end, can be partially revolved, so as to empty the ashes in each receptacle into the drawer E by means of the knobs h and k, which are attached to the valves H and K, respectively.
In operation the screened coal in the drawer E is first removed, and then, the drawer being returned to place, the ashes in each receptacle can be readily emptied into the same drawer for removal by simply turning the knobs, which at once change the bottoms H and K from their horizontal position to a perpendicular one. As the door I) is closed immediately after the material is poured into the sifter, little or no dust attends the entire operation.
By this simple and novel construction much expense and complication of parts are avoided, while the size and shape of the sifter can be greatly reduced and made more attractive and convenient for general use.
