Application filed October 17, 1917. Serial No. 197,054.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS X. DUSSEAU, citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Holders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to door holders shown in the accompanying drawings and more particularly described in the following specifications and claim.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of simple and inexpensive construction which may be installed by unskilled labor and easily and noiselessly actuated by the operators foot to either secure the door in an open position or to release the door that it may be closed.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes may be made in the precise embodiment herein disclosed, without do parting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificat1on;Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device installed upon a do0r,a fragmentary portion of which is shown representing in full lines the device engaging the floor to secure the door, and in dotted lines its released position. Fig. 2 is an edge view of a door with the device installed. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same.
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings: A, denotes a door. B, indicates the stop or holder comprising a spirally formed resilient element pivfltally engaged to the door adjacent to the floor by a Wood screw C. or other suitable attachment. The spirally coiled resilientmember forms a spring cam for engaging the floor to hold the door in an open posltion and the resiliency of the member enables the cam to be forced into the engagement with the floor as firmly as required.
D, designates a washer carried by the screw between the door and stop to protect the door from the wear incident to the operation of the device. E, is a cap or crown-washer overlapping the central convolution of the spiral element against which the head of the screw bears. F, indicates rubber tubing covindicates a knob or ball-shaped formation on,
the free end of the holder to receive the shoe of the operator for facilitating the locking and releasing of the device.
Having indicated the several parts of my invention by reference letters its construction and operation will be readily understood.
The device is gripped between the washers D and E, by means of the pivotal screw under sufficient tension to secure it in its elevated or released position, that the door may be free to swing in either direction. When it is desired to secure the door, the operator forces the stop B, into contact with the floor by hearing his foot upon the knob G:-the resilient action of the device serving to securely lock it against accidental release. lVhen it is desired to release the door the operator places the toe of his shoe under the knob and lifts the same.
- Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a door holder, a resilient spirally coiled member constituting a cam and provided at its inner end with means for frictionally engaging the pivoted end of the said member for supporting the latter in an elevated position out of engagement with the floor, said member being extended at the outer end to form an operating portion and having a head at the terminal thereof, a rubber tube covering the engaging portion of the said member and forming a yieldable surface for frictionally engaging the floor to prevent the said member when compressed into engagement with the floor from slipping out 5 of such engagement, said tube being extend- 5 ed over the operating portion of the memher and being retained in' place on the memher by the said head thereof.
