Be it known that I, FRANK SCHLATTAU., a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toys, and consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a toy embodying the principles of my invention.
F ig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional detail, illustrating the operation.
The rectangular platform 1 is mounted upon four posts 2, there being a post at each corner of the platform. Braces 3 connect the posts 2 a short distance below the platform. Wheels 4 are connected to the posts 2, so as to make a toy wagon. A tongue 5 is connected to the forward end of the platform 1. A central Opening 6 is formed longitudinally through the platform 1. Bearing posts 7 and 8 extend upwardly from the platform 1 on opposite sides of the opening 6. Bearings 9 and 10 are mounted upon the posts 7 and 8. A shaft 11 is mounted in the bearings 9 and 10. A paddle wheel 12 is mounted upon the shaft 11, said paddle wheel having a flat periphery 13 upon its rim, and blades 14 extending outwardly from the periphery. The image of a man 15 is mounted upon the platform 1, beside the paddle wheel 12. The right arm 16 of the image is mounted upon a pivot 17, said pivot forming the shoulder joint. A hammer handle 18 is fixed to the end of the arm 16, and carries a hammer head .19, and cams 20 and 21 are fixed to the shaft 11 in position to engage the end of the hammer handle 18 opposite the head 19, so that when the paddle wheel rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow 22 the rear end of the handle 18 will be engaged by a cam 2O or 21 thereby swinging the end forwardly and upwardly, and raising the hammer head 19, and then when the cam passes the handle, the weight of the hammer hea'd will cause the hammer to fall and strike the sounding plate 23, said sounding plate being mounted upon posts 24 extending upwardly from the platform 1.

` a hopper 27 is mounted between the upper ends of the pillar blocks. A spout 28 leads downwardly from the hopper and discharges into an inclined chute 29. Thechute 29 consists of a central bottom board 30 and side boards 31'and 32. The chute is mount ed so that the edges of the blades 14 pass close to the bottom board 30, and the ends of the blades pass close to the side boards 31 and 32, so that when sand, or water, or the like runs from the hopper 27 it will rotate the paddle wheel 12, to operate the hammer 19. A stopper 32 is mounted upon a vertical stem 33,l and the stem is slidingly mounted through a bearing block 34, and the bearing block is fixed across the top of the hopper 27. A guide bar 35 is mounted above the bearing block 34, and the stem 33 extends upwardly through the guide bar. A slot 36 extends from the bearing opening through the guide bar 35, and a pin 37 is fixed in the stem 33, so that when the stem 33 is turned the pin 37 will pass downwardly through the slot 36, and the stopper 32 will fit and close the upper end of the spout 28. The stem 33 extends some distance above the guide bar 35, and the upper end of the stem serves as a handle for operating the stopper.
The hopper 27 may be fixed with dry sand, water, or any suitable material which will flow readily through the spout 28, and by manipulating the handle of the stem 33 the material may be allowed to flow through the spout 28 and chute 29 to rotate the paddle wheel 12 to the desired extent, thereby 0perating the hammer head 19 to strike the desired number of blows. If a supply of material is secured the hammer head 19 may be operated continuously by pouring material into the hopper 27 as fast as it runs out. For this purpose a receptacle may be placed below the slot 29 to catch the material, and this receptacle may be emptied into the hopper as fast as the material flows.
I have shown and described a type of the undershot wheel which is actuated by sand or liquid. It will be understood, of course, that an overshot wheel may be used with the same results.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a platform, a paddle wheel mounted vupon the platform, a hopper mounted above the paddle Wheel and adapted to discharge material against the paddle Wheel, an arm pivotally mounted, a hammer carried by said arm means whereby the rotation of the paddle Wheel reoiproeates the arm, and a sounding plate in position to be struck by the hammer.
2. A toy comprising a Carriage having a horizontal platform, a paddle Wheel mount ed upon the platform, a hopper mounted in position to discharge material lagainst the paddle Wheel for rotating the paddle Wheel, a hammer mounted to be operated by f the rotation of the paddle Wheel, and -a sounding plate in position to be struck by the hammer.
3. A toy comprising a paddle Wheel, a hopper mounted in position to discharge material against the paddle Wheel, a stopper for controlling the material, an image mounted beside the paddle Wheel, and having a pivoted arm, a hammer carried by the pivoted arm, means Whereby the rotation of the paddle Wheel operates the hammer, and a sounding plate in position to be struck by the hammer.
