The present invention is directed to improvements in snow plows. Y 4
The primary object of the inventionis to a provide a device of this character so constructed that it can be propelled upon a highway, the construction being such that the snow will be removed from the highway and deposited along thesides thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that snow will be cut as the plow is advanced and discharged laterally.
Another object of the invention is to provide a deviceof this character with a pair of paddle wheels mounted in advance of the discharge fans'in order that the snow'will be agitated so as to more readily enter the fan casing.
' In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan View.
Figure 2 1s afront view. Figure 3 is a bottom plan view. Figure 4 is a rear elevation. Figure'5 is a side elevation. Figure 6 is a side elevation, partly in section. Figure 7 is a view, partly in section, showing the plow blade lifting mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a frame which supports a gas engine 2 and a transverse shaft 3, said shaft having fixed thereon outer gears 4 and an intermediate gear 5. Also fixed to the shaft 3 is a beveled gear 5, the purpose of which will be later explained. I
Supported by the frame is a pair of casings6 in which are mounted fans 7, the blades 8 of which are provided with teeth 9 to'aid 1n cutting the snow as it enters the caslngs through the openings 10 thereof.
The shafts 11 of the, fans have thelr rear ends provided with gears 12 which mesh with the gears 4 of the shaft 3, rotary movement being imparted to said shaft by the gear 13 carried by the engine shaft 14 which meshes with the gear 5. The casings 6 have carried thereby laterally directed discharge spouts 15.
To the front of the casings 6 and near the top thereof are secured brackets 16, while secured to the casings and in advance thereof by hinges 16' is a plow blade 17 adapted to slide upon the roadway, said blade having brackets 18 fixed thereto. Vertically disposed cutting blades 19 have their lower ends pivoted to the brackets 18 and slidable in the brackets 16, said blades supporting bearings 20, there being an intermediate cutting blade 21 similarly secured.
A shaft 22 is journaled in the bearings 20 and has mounted thereon a pair of paddle wheels 23 which include crossed bars 24 which support the horizontal blades 25, said bars 24 being fixed to the shaft 22 by collars 26. The shaft 22 has fixed thereon a gear 27 which meshes with the gear 28 fixed to the forward endof theshaft 29, the rear end of said shaft having a gear 30 fixed thereto which meshes with the gear 5, as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
In this manner rotary movement will be I imparted to thepaddle wheels 23 as well as to thefans 7, when the motor 2 is operated. The frame 1 is supported by ground wheels 31, which are mounted on steering knuckles 32 carried by the ends of the axle 33 there being a rod 34 connecting the knuckles which is shifted by the link 35 connected to the steering post 36 in the column .37. In this manner the machine may be guided, there being an adjustable draw bar 38 carried by the rear end of the frame 1 for attachment to a tractor.
In order that the plow blade 17 may be elevated when desired a lever 39 is mounted on the frame 1 and is connected with the blade by a rigid arm 40 which carries a fork 41 adapted to engage under the blade, so that when the lever is shifted the arm will move the blade to swing it upwardly and downwardly upon the hinges. 16.
In use a tractor is hitched to the draw bar to advance the plow, and when the motor is operated it will be obvious that the paddle Wheels 23 will, during their rotation, agitate the snow and drive the same into the casings 6, whereupon the fans, during their rotation, will force the same through the spouts to the sides of the highway. The blades 19 and 21 will obviously cut the snow as the plow is advanced, and since the snow may become banked during the advance of the plow,
the plow may be stopped and the paddle wheels and fans maintained in motion until the snow is again in condition to permit the plow to be advanced.
Having thus described the invention, I v
claim: I
1. A device of the class described comprismg a frame, a pair of casings mounted upon the frame and having openings in their front sides, a plow blade adjustably mounted in ad- Vance of the casings, brackets carried by the casings and plow blade, vertically disposed cutting blades having their lower ends pivotally connected to the brackets of the plow blade and their upper ends slidable in the brackets carried by the casings, a shaft journaled intermediate the ends of the blades, paddle wheels-fixed to the shaft in line with said openings, fans mounted in the casing, and means for simultaneously rotating vthe fans and paddle wheels.
2. A device of the class described compriseing a pair of fan casings having openings in their front sides, fans rotatable in the casings and having teeth carried by their blades, a cutting blade pivotally mounted in advance of the casings, a'plow'blade pivotally associated with the casings, said cutting blades having their lower ends pivotallyconnected with the plow blade and their upper ends slidably connected with the casings, paddle wheels journaled in advance of the openings of the casings and in alinement therewith for agitating snow before the same passes into the openings, and means for simultaneously rotating the fans and paddle'wheels.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. ARTHUR P. JENSEN. [in s.]
