11 a a l I I I l 19 v HVVENTOR HENRY A. SGHULKE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SAND TOY. i
Application filed May 31,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. SOI-IULKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sand Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and particularly to what are known as sand toys, in which said or other flowing material is fed out of a hopper onto a rotary wheel which operates a figure. In the present instance the figure is located above the hopper and carries a stirrer rod which agitates and dislodges the sand in the hopper so as to cause it to flow freely. The hopper is provided with a chute which is adjustable to prevent the iiow when desired.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig; 2 is a front elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical section. Fig. i is a detail in section of the hopper. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail of the chute.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a pan which forms a base for the device and also serves to hold the sand discharged from the wheel. Standing on the base is a pair. of uprights 7 which support the hopper S. Mounted in bearing slots 9 in the uprights 7 is a crank shaft 10 which carries a wheel 11 having buckets or blades 12, the wheel being spaced from the uprights by spacing blocks or pieces 13, secured to the shaft. The crank 14 of the shaft is connected by a rod 15 to a figure 16, the rod working through a guide 1'? and supporting the figure in position above the hopper. The figure carries a rod 18 which depends into the hopper, the lower end of the rod working in the mouth of the hopper. Under the hopper is a chute 19 pivoted to the lower end of the hopper by a pin 20 so that the chute may be tilted to any desired position, to either stop or regulate the flow of material. The chute has an arm or projecting part 21 at one side thereof which bears in friction contact against the side of Specification of Letters Patent.

the hopper, and as shown in full lines in F 1g. the chute 19 is in locked position, the arm 21 being in frictional contact against the side of the hopper 8, and as shown in dotted lines of said Fig. 4 the chute is adjusted to disengage the arm 21 permitting the chute to fall to its operating position by Y gravity and permitting the sand to flow out.
In operation, sand is placed in the hopper, and the chute is adjusted to allow the same to flow out, and the'sand falls on the buckets 12 causing the wheel to revolve. This raises and lowers the figure and the stirrer rod 18 which assists in causing a free fiow of the sand. The buckets on the side of the wheel opposite the throw of the crank 14 may be weighted slightly, as indicated at 30, to counterbalance'the weight of the figure as it is lifted, thereby assisting in giving a regular motion in turning.
I claim:
l. The combination of a hopper, a bucket wheel under the hopper, a. crank shaft on which the wheel is mounted, a rod connected to the crank, a figure carried'by the rod above the hopper, and a stirring rod carried by the figure and depending into the hopper.
2. A toy comprising a hopper, standards supporting the same, a crank shaft extending between the standards, a bucket wheelmounted on the shaft under the hopper, a connecting rod operated by the crank and extending upwardly above the hopper, a figure mounted on the top of the connecting rod, and a stirrer rod carried by the figure and depending into the hopper.
The combination with a hopper and a bucket wheel onto which the hopper discharges, of a chute pivoted to the lower end of the hopper and adjustable to various angles, said chute having an arm pressing against the side of the hopper to hold the chute at adjustment.
In testimonywhereof, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
HENRY A. SCHULKE; Witnesses:
JOHN A. BOMMHARDT, EDWARD J. HOBDAY.
