NAPOLEON B. RIDDLE, OF WILSON, LOUISIANA.
TROUSERS-PRESSER.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Dr. NAPOLEON B. RID- DLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vilson, in the parish of East Feliciana and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Pressers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which is appertains to'make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in trousers pressers, and has for one of its objects the provision of a novel device of this kind which shall be simple, durable and eiiicient, which may be suspended in a closet, which will permit a pair of trousers to be applied thereto or removed therefrom while suspended, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a trousers press constructed in accordance with my invention, Y
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation illustrating the press boards in opened position,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending transversely through the trousers press at a point adjacent the yoke,
Fig. e is a detail view of a portion of the yoke and clamping screw, such portion and thl clamping screw being partly in section, an
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing 'by reference numerals, 1 designates a pair of tapered press boards which may be constructed of wood, metal or any other material suitable for the purpose. The smaller ends of the boards are connected together by a hinge 2, the leaves of which are secured to the outer sides of the boards by screws 3. The larger ends of the boards are provided with V-shaped incisions, 6. Longitudinally extending seam receiving grooves T are formed in the inner sides of the boards. The grooves 7 gradually increase in width in the direction of the larger ends of the boards, and they terminate short of the smaller ends of the boards and extend Specification of Letters Patent.

to and out through the larger ends of theboards. Transversely extending cuff receiving grooves 8 are formed 1n the inner sides of the boards adjacent of the boards and communicate with the smaller ends of the grooves 7 Y A hook 9 is swiveled to the medial portion of the hinge 3, and it permits the trousers press to be suspended ina closet from a hook or other support. A hook 10 is secured to the outer side'of one of the boards adjacent the hinge 2, and it adapts the trousers press for supporting a coat hanger 1l when suspended by the hook 9.
A yoke 12 is slidably mounted upon the boards 1. The sides 13 of the yoke 12 are longer than the combined thicknesses of the boards 1, and the head 14 of the yoke is provided with a screw threaded opening 15 for the reception of a screw 16. The inner end 17 of the screw 16 has swiveled thereto a head 18, and the outer end of the screw is provided with a hand wheel 19. In length, the yoke 12 is greater than the width of the smaller end of the press so as to permit it to be applied to and removed from the trousers press. The length of the yoke is less than the width of the press at a point spaced inwardly from but in close proximity to the inner ends of the incisions 6, to prevent the yoke from being moved to or beyond the inner ends of the incisions. This insures the positioning of the head 8 over the adjacent press board, so that the boards will be clamped when the screw 6 is vturned inwardly.
When it is desired to press a pair of trousers, the yoke 12 is rst removed, and then one of the press boards 1 is swung upon the hinge 3 into the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The trousers are then folded and placed upon one of the press boards with the outer seam of one leg of the trousers in the groove 7 of that board and the outer portion of the cuff of this leg of the trousers S of that board. The other press board is then swung or closed upon the trousers. rIhe groove 7 of said other board receives the outer seam of the other leg of the trousers, and the groove 8 of said other board receives the outer portion of the cuff of said other leg ofthe trousers. The yoke 12 is then applied and moved in the direction of the larger end of the trousers press,
y their smaller ends. These grooves extend through the side edges ldone by turning the screw and then the screw 16 is turned'to exert the pressure upon the press boards. The body of the trousers is received by the V-sliaped incisions 6, and in view thereof and in View of the grooves 7 and 8, the trousers Will be effectively and neatly pressed. If desired, the trousers press may, after the application of--the trousers, be suspended from a'suitable support by the hook 9. The trousers, may be removed from the press Without removing the press from its support. This may be 16 outwardly, moving the yoke 1,2 upwardly upon the press, and then swinging one of the press boards l outwardly. I t should be apparent that the trousers may also be inserted in the press Without removing the press from its Support vliavingv tlius fully described my invention, what I elairn as new and desire to secure by Lettersv Patent, is:
A trousers press comprising a pair of tapered press boards, each press board being provided in its inner side with a transversely extending cuff receiving groove and with a longitudinallyl extending seam receiving groove, the transverse grooves being located at the smaller ends of the press boards and the longitudinal grooves communicating with the transverse grooves and eXtending therefrom in the direction of and through the larger ends or' the press boards and increasing in Width in, the directies of Said ends, the larger ends of the press boards being Provided With Vfshaped incisions, a hinge Connecting the smaller ends YQi' the f press boards, and a clamp removably mount 'ed upon, the press 1 In test-meny Whereef I adir mysgnaturc in presence of tWo Witnesses.
