IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,872, dated July 9, 1872.

To all whom it may. concern:

Be it known that I, RANSOM P. GILLETT, of Sparta, in the county of Monroe and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing Machines; and do hereby declare that the followin g is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in

which is shown a perspective view of my improved machine.

In the annexed drawing, A represents a platform or frame, from opposite sides of which extend vertically upward two standards, B, the upper ends of which are provided with horizontal bearings 12. Resting within the bearings b is a shaft, 0, upon which, and between one end to or upon the weight F, completes the device, the operation of which is as follows: The cover d is removed, a suitable quantity of soiled clothing and of boiling soap-suds inserted within the box, and said cover replaced. The operator now grasps the outer end of the bar G, and with it gives to the weight F a swinging motion, which motion is communicated through the rod E to the shaft and box,

so as to cause the latter to rock upon its bearings, and throw both clothes and water from end to end within the same, the violence of the shock occasioned by the striking of said clothes upon or against the ends of said box being sufiicient to loosen the dirt contained, and speedily and thoroughly cleanse them.

The several parts of this device are simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and the whole can be built by any farmer havingonly ordinary experience in the use of tools, while in its operation said device wil accomplish the same result with much greater case than has heretofore been possible with the more complicated and expensive mechanism commonly used.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is-- The hereinbefore described washingmachine, in which the reservoir D, the pivotal shaft 0, the rod E, and the weight F, are combined with each other and with the supporting-frame,'substantially as"and for the purpose specified.
