Description
JOHN E. CARROLL AND JOHN LORD, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 113,493, dated April 11, 1871.
SMPROVEMENT iN WASHING'MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldng parl: of the same.
We, JOHN F. CARROLL and J OHL LORD, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State Oi' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Irnprovements in Washing-Machines, Ot' which the tbllowing is a speciiication.
The Object ot' Our invention is to provide a. simple 'and effect-nal machine in which can be washed the linest or coarsest clothes without injury to the fabric.
v'loaeeomplish thiswe employ a square or any suitable-shaped casino. On the interior Ot'salne are formed rubbers similar to the face of an Ordinary wash-board.
Piroted at dilierent points are swinging frames with corrugations. The casing is mounted on a suitable frame, and rotatedby means Ot' a crank in order to squeeze and rub the clothes without unnecessary pressure,- )vli/ich is injurious to the fabric,
Figure 1 is a side viewot'onr machine.
`Figure 2 is an end view of the saine.
Figure is asectiOnal-view on the line A. B, tig?. 2, with lid thrown back. y
' Figure 4 is a detached View oi' one of the swinging frames.
To enable those skilled in the art-to make and use our invention, ,we will now proceed to describe its con struction and' Operation.
Gis the casing of the machine, which is made square, triangular, diamond, or any suitable shape. On the interior oi' saine, at the sides, ends, top, and bottoni are corrugated surfaces, as shown iu iig.`3.
On the interior, and pivote-d to the sides of the casing, areecrrugated swinging frames S F, as shown in ligs. 3 and 4.
On the outside, and in the center of the casing C,
and secured to the'same by means ofscrews, bolts, or othcrwise,'are plates D, provided witlra shoulder. The casing is mounted on a suitable trame or upright, F, the' shoulders of theV plates D working or re-` volving in 4suitable bearings centered in the upright h" in order to allow the casingr C to turn freely by Ineens Ot' theerank H. -v
0n top Oi' the casing C is formed .a suitable Opening in which is secured, by means of metallicstraps or otherwise, a tight-.fitting lid, L.
lhe Operation ofthe machine is as follows:
lhe clothes to be washed are placedin the casing through the Opening covered by the lid L; sutlicient water is introduced into the casing to cover the clothes.l
The crank-H is now turned, which revolves the easing C. As the casing rotates thefclothes are thrownr against the corrugated surfaces, and on top and under the swinging frames Sl F, which squeeze and beat the clothes without injury to the fabric.
Having,` thus described our invention, I
What we claim,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the casing C, provided. o n the interior with the corrugated surfaces and frames S F, as shown and described.
In testimony whereot` we have hereunto signed our Witnesses: l
