Be it known that I, FRANK J. I-IRUSKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the countyof Linn and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Books, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to books and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

More particularly the invention relates to in'iprovements in books designed for use with bookkeeping machines. Such books ordinarily are loose leaf books and the usual manner of using such books is to place them in a rack designed to hold them upright with the hinge portion at the bottom and with the covers slightly open so as to permit of inspection, removal and insertion of the leaves. lVith the present invention the rack is dispensed with and devices are placed on the book itself for holding the book upright and slightly open. These devices preferably are such as can be so positioned relatively to the cover as to permit the book to be placed on a shelf in ordinary relation to other books.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows an end elevation of the book in open position.

1 marks the back, 2 the telescoping portions of the loose leaf securing means; and 7 the post carried by the loose leaf securing means. This may be of ordinary construction, ordinarily such as to receive slotted leaves and to clamp the same between the adjustable members -2. While some loose leaf securing element is desirable the particular kind of securing means is not im portant. The securing elements may be adjusted through the opening 3 in the usual manner.

The covers a are hinged to the adjusting members 2 at 5. slots (not shown) extending over the posts or leaf securing elements 7. So far this is a common loose leaf book.

A plate 8 is secured to each edge of each of the covers a. This plate has a slot 9 terminating in an offset 10. A bail 11 havingthe horizontal portion 12 is pivotally secured at each end to the plate 8 by means of the pin 13 which extends through the slot 9 and has the head 14 on the inner side of the plate 8. The pin 13 can slide along the slot 9 and pass into the offset 10. A link 15 is pivotally secured at 16 to the side of the bail 11 and the opposite end of the link is pivotally secured at 17 to the plate 8.

In Fig. 1 the bail 11 is shown in its outer position. The pin 13 is in the offset 10 and this with the link locks the bail 11 in its outer position and gives to the cover a support holding it slightly open, the cover assuming a position more nearly vertical than horizontal. This is the ordinary position in which these books are used and permits inspection of the leaves and at the same time holds the leaves in a position nearly vertical so as to permit of the ready removal and insertion of these leaves. l/Vhen it is desired toclose the book, the pins 13 are pulled out of the offsets 10 and then the lower end of the bail forced inwardly. The pins 13 slide up the slots 9 and the link 15 and bail 11 fold into alinement with the cover.

I prefer to provide the groove 18 in the edge of the cover to receive the horizontal portion 12 of the bail. The horizontal por tion 12 is preferably covered with leather to avoid marring the surface on which the book rests.

What I claim as new is 1. In a book, the combination of a back; a cover hinged thereto the cover having a slot in the edge thereof; a cover support having a pin extending into the slot and slidable therein; and a link pivotally secured to the cover and to said support.

2. In a book, the combination of a hinged cover having a slot in the edge thereof, said slot having an offset therein; a cover support having a pin extending into the slot and offset and slidable therein; and a link pivotally secured to the cover and to said support.

3. In a book, the combination of a hinged cover; a bail having its ends slidably connected with the edges of the cover; and links pivotally connected with the cover and the bail.

4. In a book, the combination of a hinged cover having slots in its edges; a bail; pins extending from the bail and into said slots and slidable in said slots; and links pivotally connected with the cover and the bail. 5. In a book, the combination of a hinged cover having slots in its edges, said slots having offset portions; a bail; pins extending from the bail and into said slots and slidable in said slots and offsets; and links pivotally connected with the cover and the bail.

6. In a book, the combination of a cover having a groove therein; a hinge mounting for the cover; and a bail carried by the cover and having one end slidingly and pivotally secured in the groove and the opposite end free to swing independently of any movement of the cover relatively to its mounting toward and away from the cover 20 FRANK J.
