lSpecileation of Letters Patent.
Application led September 3, 1918. Serial No. 252,336.
To all rwhom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST L. FARRow,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstea'd- Locks, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention com rises a bedstead lock which is equally applicable to wood or metal beds, eXceedin ly simple and strong in construction, an adapted to be made of stamped o r pressed metal at a low cost. rIhe lock is also constructed to secure the side rails of the bedstead reversibly in position in a simple and convenient way and with perfect alinement and great clamping effect. In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspectit'e view of my improved bedstead lock. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the rail showing the locking plate and rail secured together. Fig. 3 is a face view of the locking plate alone. ,Fig 4 is a section on a central vertical line through the locking parts aiixed to a bedstead post. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of one locking end portion of a rail.
The invention consists of a metal plate 2 which in the present showing is llat and adapted to be axed in a perpendicular position upon a iat bedstead post 3 by screws or bolts A li 5 of rectangular` form is struck up from t is plate near 1ts lower end, and this lip projects upwardly and outwardly at an angle of forty-live degrees or less to the perpendicular llat face 6 of the plate. Immediately above this lip and centrally related thereto, is a short stud 7 riveted to the plate, and at a greater distance from this lip at or near the upper end and center of the plate is a longer screwthreaded stud or bolt 8 which may also be riveted to the plate. The distance between the two studs is approximately three inches, whereas the lip 5 is approximately only onehalf 'inch distant from the short stud 7, thereby providing a relatively long at bearing surface intermediate the studs and placing the short stud in close centering relation to the lip.' This lip is also wide enough to extend some distance toeach side of the stud so that the bifurcated ends 9 of an angle plate 10 may have wedging engagement with the lip when this slotted end straddles the stud 7, and both the upper and lower bility when t ends of angle plate 10 are bifurcated, or in other words provided with open central slots. 11 which are preferably Haring or have a wide entrance to permit convenient assembly. and interengagementof the parts. I lowever, it is not intended that the o poslte edges of these aring slots shall ear against the studs with wedging elect. On the contrary, a slight space is left at each side of the stud so that the full weight on the angle plate and the side rail 12 to which it is riveted will bear down upon and be carried byv lip 5 and -produce an effective wedging and clampinggrip on the angle plate 10.l In this way stud 7 merely serves as a centering guide and side holding medium for the angle plate 10, thereby contributingy to convenient assemblyof the parts while not wedging the lock parts too tightly together to prevent easy separae thumb nut 14 isremoved. This nut bythe way is screwed upon the longer stud or bolt 8 and bears against the upper bifurcated end 9 of the -angle plate 10. when the lower bifurcated end is resting upon lip 5,- and the two slots 11 are alike to permit the rail and angle plate to be remust be understood that both ends of the rail are equipped alike with angle plates and the head and foot posts with corre- -inclination to the body thereof and provided with a centerin stud and a fastening screw centrally in line 'with said lip, in combination with a bed rail having an angle plate provided with slotted ends adapted to straddle said stud and screw and rest upon and behind said lip, and a nut for said screw.

versed or inverted. In this connection it to its face and said angle-plate having opposite bifurcated ends, either one of which vis adapted to be seated asti-ide said' lip, and
, means to center and draw said plates to.
5 gether.
3. A bedstead lock, comprising a flat plate havino' s centrally opposite said `lip and a longer y110 screw-threaded stud. more remotely therea lip bent outwardly at an anglev therefrom 'and provided with 'a short stud ed .studv adapted to draw said plates to- 15 gether.
Si ed at Cleveland, in the county. of
Cuya oga, and State of Ohio. thisv27th day i l of August, 1918.
