A TTORNEYS location of the tie or the connections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener embodying improved means for accommodating rails with webs of different thicknesses or to compensate For the interposition of fish-platesor the iike.
With these and other objects in view thpresent invention consists in the combination and arrangement oi parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the ac companying drawings, and particularlypointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be madewithout departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View or". the improved rail-fastener applied to a tie and rail. Fi 2 is a sectional view transverse of the rail and taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the tieplate and with one flange clamp applied. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the base-flange clam Li e characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the d rawin s.
n its preferred embodirnen the improved rail-fastener forming the subject-matter oi this application comprises pair of similar tielates 10, having spaced bolt opcnings 1i Wit polygonal depressions or 12, forming angular countorsiuks i'cr the openings 11. The plates are aiso provided their corners with the squared bolt-openi 13, through which are inserted bolts let,
n which the two plates are clamped upon the upper and lower sides of the tie, as 15, with.
residing at Ben-- -ilange ciarnp V 7 proportioned to r le no he' a designated by th. longest 21. The clamp is provided with a bolt-opening through which. is inserted a bolt 23 after passing through ti 0 tie and with the head 24 proportioned t fit Within. the polygonal rec ss 12 of the under late. Upon the bolt 23 is a nut by whicn the ciamp is clamped upon the base-P ange of the rail, as
As shown in 1, the longest arm 21 in use, while in Fig. 2 fish-plates are shown upon the sides of the rail and the shortest arm 18 used; in operation either arm may be used upon either side of the rail, as conditions make expedient, and. by loosening the nuts 25 and turning the clamps the gage or alinement oi the rails may be changed or a rail replaced by one having a different thickness of Web without disturbing the plates or their con neotion with the tie. It will be obvious that by reason of using a plate on the top and another on the bottom a tie of any Inateri-a may be used and that with ties which decay the two plates will prolong the usefulness of the tie by a very long period.
In the drawings clamps are shown to con- 01111 to the rails of the usual and ordinary form and proportion. it will be understood that the form of the clamping member may be changed to conform to and clamp rails of any. size and proportion or to accommodate fish-plates or joint-chairs of any form and size.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. in a rail-fastener a rigid, angular base flange clamp having an eccentrically-disposed angular lug extending therefrom, said lug provided with centrally-disposed boltrcoeiving aperture.
in a raiidastencr, a rigid base-flange he his arms ra l'- 1 ing tl' erefrorn and of lim t or ..m. A guiar lug extend our the clamp and having a centrallycisposed bolt-receiving aperturetherein.
3. A fastener comprising a tie-plate provided with a. polygonal recess and a rigid FPS base-flan e elem QHibOtlVilW 2t nlurelit" of l a 1 6 i v flange-e arms and ror engagement W1 t inn the recess.
4. A reihfnstener comprising tie-plate provided with. e polygon sl recess and a rigid baseflungo clamp embodying e plurality of l'iangeen a ln fiI'HlS and 111621118 en a in n n b c: o b o so proportioned that eit ier gid oonteotwith the of the openings, e hose-flange olenp provided ynth an anguiar lug to engage the recess and an opening registering with ti 3 openings of the plates, and a bolt towing a heed to con form to and engage Within the recess of the nncler plate and. to extend through the upper piete and the flange-clamp clamp embodying a plurality of redielly-extending fiangeengaging arms graded in length and alug pro ortioned to be engaged Within the polygons opening of the upper plate and to position either arm in contact With the flange, and a bolt having a head to conform to and engage within the recess of the under plate and to extend through the upper plate and the flange-clamp.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
ELI T. FORRESTER. Witnesses:
