CHARLES B. MOLAIN, OF WATSONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO FRANCIS H. MILLER AND JOHN G. BOWER, OF SAME PLACE.
TABLE-LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,286, dated April 21, 1885.
Application filed October 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. MOLAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Watsontown, in the county of N orthumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Legs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in table-legs, the object being to provide a cheap and effective means wherebythe table-leg can be securely attached to a corner-piece of the table; and to this end my invention consists in providing the cornerpiece with a vertical recess having grooves therein which are adapted to engage with the rectangular head of a bolt, a passage-way for the body of the bolt, and a cylindrical recess or socket within which will fit the upper por tion of the table-leg, which is centrally provided with a female screw-thread for the reception of the bolt, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the corner-piece, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
A represents the corner-piece of the table,
which is provided at its edges with vertical grooves a a, within which are secured the side pieces. This corner-piece is provided at its upper portion with a recess, B. This recess when first formed is cylindrical in crosssection, and after the same has been bored to a sufficient depth vertical grooves 12 are cut into the same for the reception of the corners of the rectangular head of the bolt C. From the center of the recess B is a cylindrical opening, 0, which is adapted to receive the body portion of the bolt.
The lower portion of the corner-piece Ahas formed therein a cylindrical recess or socket, D, within which will fit the cylindrical portion D, which is formed on the upper end of the table-leg, a shoulder, d, being formed adj acent to said cylindrical portion D, said shoulder being adapted to abut against the lower edge of the corner-piece A, which is perfectly straight. The cylindrical central portion, D, of the table-leg will engage with the threaded portion of the bolt.
Before the table is placed together the bolt C is placed in the recess D, so that the corners of its head will engage with grooves b, and its body portion extend through the opening 0. The top and side rails are then secured in position in the usual manner. To secure the table-leg in position it is only necessary to place the cylindrical portion D in the socket D and turn the same, the threaded portion of the bolt engaging with the female screw-thread formed in the table-leg.
By this construction I provide a means whereby the table-leg can be readily attached and detached.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been common to provide the corner-pieces of a table with a female screw-threaded socket into which the table-leg was screwed; and I do not claim such as myinvention.
I claim In combination with the corner-piece of a table, having a recess formed in its upper end for the reception of the rectangular head of a bolt, a passage-way for the body portion of the bolt, and a cylindrical socket in the lower portion of the corner-piece, the leg having a cylindrical portion, D, with a central female screw-thread and a bolt, the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES B. MOLAIN.
