Description
BENT Flt).
FREDERICK WILLIAM. MEBRIWEATI-IER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
BED-RAIL FASTENER.
Application filed July 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F REDERIOK IV. MERRI- WEATHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented. a new and Improved Bed-Rail Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and improved fastener for a bed rail, and particularly to a fastener which is interchangeable, so that it may be used with various styles of beds.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive device, which may be readily attached to the rail of any bed having a slot or socket fastening, and which will serve as a secure means of fastening the rail to the end of the bed.
The invention consists, generally speaking, of a rail having a head secured thereon, a bolt secured in said head, said bolt being adapted to engage a slot or socket in the end of the bed, and a wedge adapted to cause said bolt to secure said rail and said end tightly together.
The invention further consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing a fastening device attached to a rail; and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In the ordinary course of a furniture dealers business, a considerable number of heads on bed rails are broken each year. This device is intended to be secured to such broken bed rails, to furnish a means of fastening the bed rail to the end.
Referring to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates the rail of a bed, to which is secured in any suitable manner, as by means of rivets 2, a suitable head 3. Removably secured in an opening 4 in the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 29, 1910.
1909. Serial No. 509,835.
end of the head 3, there is provided a bolt 5, which has a nut (3 screw-threaded thereon, the latter being adapted to engage in a socket or slot 7 in block 8 on the end of a bed 9. Slidable in a slot 10 in the head 3, there is provided a wedge 11, which has a slot 12 therein, through which the bolt 5 is adapted to extend in such a manner that the'wedge 11 will exert a cam-like forcing action on the head of the bolt, 5, to draw the nut 6 in binding connection with the slot 7 in the block 8.
In order to prevent the head 3 and the rail 1 from tilting, there are provided a plurality of dowel-pins 13, which are secured in any well-known manner to the head 3, and are adapted to extend into the slot 7 on the block 8, above and below the bolt 5.
The method of using the device will be readily understood from the above description. lVhen the usual shoulder on the bed rail has been broken off, the head 3 may be secured to the broken end of the rail 1 by means of the rivets 2, and the nut (3 on the bolt 5 adjusted the proper distance so as to firmly grip the rail 1 to the block 8 when the wedge 11 is driven home. There is thus provided a simple and efficient device, which may be readily adjusted to beds of various sizes and styles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bed rail, of a head on said bed rail, a bed end, a block on said end, having a slot therein, a bolt removably secured to said head and adapted to engage a slot in said end, a wedge in said head adapted to force said bolt into locking engagement with said block, and means on said head adapted to engage said slot, to prevent tilting motion of said rail.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a bed rail, of a head on said bed rail, rivets for securing said head to said bed rail, a bed end, a block on said end, having a socket slot therein, a bolt removably secured to said head, a nut adjustably secured to said bolt and adapted to engage the socket slot in said end, a slotted Wedge in said head, threaded onto said bolt and adapted to force said nut into locking engagement With said block, and a plurality of pins secured to said head, adapted to engage said socket slot in said block, to prevent tilting motion of said rail.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
FREDERTCK WILLIAM MERRIWEATHER.
