Description

E. HOLLINGS.
NUT BLANK FORMING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 16, 1912.

iZ /Q ERNEST HOLLINGS, OF SALE, ENGLAND.
N UT- BLANK-FORMING- MACHINE.
Application filed February 16, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST HOLLINGS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Sale, county of Cheshire, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in N ut-BlanlcForming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to those machines in which a movable striking piece is used to knock off the pressed blank from the face of the ejecting plunger (commonly termed the snap or crowner) which usually has a recessed end to give the proper form to one face of the nut blank, and in which recess the nut blank sometimes strongly adheres and is not certainly removed by the usual straight acting knocker off.
I hereafter describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings on which Figures 1 and 2 are views at right angles to each other of part of a nut blank making machine showing my improvements. a is part of the machine frame, Z) knocker ofl. slide operated in a downward direction by a cam c on the shaft (Z which is journaled in the usual way in hearings on the frame a. The knocker-off slide 7) is slidably held in position by the retaining plate on said plate being secured to the main frame a by fixed bolts 1?. a passing through elongated holes 6 o in the slide 6. The upward return motion of the slide 1) is effected by the large spring 37 which abuts at its upper end against the projecting portion 7) of the knocker off slide 6, the lower end of the spring 3) abutting against the projecting portion m of the fixed plate m. The rod 1 is secured to the fixed retaining plate m, passes loosely through the projection 7) and serves to re- Speeification of Letters Patent.

tain the large spring 10 in correct working position. To insure certain and clear knocking off of the nut blank from the ejecting plunger I make use of a knocking off piece 0 pivoted at f to the knocking 01f slide 2) in such manner that the striking end c of the knocking off piece is caused to have in addition to its downward movement a movement outward from the ejecting plunger in the die it as shown in dotted lines e so that the nut blank is knocked outwardly away from the ejecting plunger g thus drawing the nut blank sidewise out of the recess 2' in the plunger 9 instead of such nut blank, as hitherto, being forced down at right angles to the plunger. This movement of the knocking ofi piece may be obtained by a pin and roller 7' attached to the knocking off piece and sliding in an angularly arranged guide 70 on the main frame a. Z is a spring and plunger seated in the knocking off piece 6 the plunger bearing against the slide Z) to prevent vibration of the pin j in the guide is and insure that the roller j runs smoothly on the outer face 70'', of the angular guide In, but I do not confine myself to this arrangement except as defined by the appended claim.
I claim: Y
In a nut blank forming machine, a slide on the fixed die frame adapted to move in guides at right angles to the axis of the blank, a rocking piece pivoted on the slide. one arm of the rocking piece being adapted to bear against the nut blank, and an angularly disposed guide on the fixed die frame engaging with the other end of the rocking piece, substantially as set forth.
ERNEST HOLLINGS.
