Specicatio forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,235. dated September 30, 1873; application led February 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. GOODWIN, of Brewerton, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Gam-Movements, of which the following is a specification:
The rst part of my invention relates to cam-groove walls and rolls; and consists in the walls being placed out of the plane of each other, and their combination with double friction-rollers working on the same arbor or` stud in such amanner that each roll may have opposite and independent bearing-surfaces or cam-walls to work against; the object of this part of my invention being to furnish camgroove and rolls which may be more closely iitted, will run easier with less noise, and be more durable than those heretofore in use. The second part of my invention relates to .the combination, with cam groove walls placed out of the plane of each other and double friction-rollers working on the same arbor or stud, of the mechanical means of relatively adjusting them in such relation to each other that the lost motion, when they become worn or are otherwise too loose, may be taken up, and in such a manner that the looseness Of the rolls on their arbors or studs may be compensated, as well as the space between the outside of the roll and the wall it works against.

The roll b is made with a slight taper, the walls c x conforming to the shape of the roll, so that they can be adjusted by moving the arbor t' inward until the rolls b b are brought to a bearing against By unscrewing the check-nuts the part E is drawn back. By screwing them up the part E is moved forward until the space between the rolls a a and the walls of the cam p t is taken up 5 also, the looseness of the rolls on the arbor or stud. A set-screw may be used at S, or the walls may be left solid, doing away with the adjustable part. The heartcam B is secured to the vibrating bar k, having the movable wall l, held in position by the set-screw m and the guide-pins a u; or it can be moved and held as shown in cam A. When the wall Z is moved forward against the roll c, the looseness of the rolls on the arbor o and the space between the rolls and the walls of thev cam are taken up, allowing the rolls to have a free counter-movement; or the adjustable part can be dispensed with, as before.
I make lno claim to .camgrooves having single rolls working iii-them, for the purpose of converting rotary into reciprocating motion, which I am aware is not new; but
I claim as my invention- 1. The cam-groove walls placed out of the plane of each other, and their combination with double friction-rolls Workin g on the samearbor or stud, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
42. The combination of the cam-groove walls placed out of the plane of each other and double friction-rolls working on the same arbor or stud with the mechanical means of relatively adjusting the said walls and rolls in such relation to each other that the lost motion may be taken up, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
