PILL OR TABLET MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,432, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed December 12, 1891. Serial No. 414,882. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD T. SEARS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pill or Tablet Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in pill or tablet machines; and it consists, first, of a hopper for the pill or tablet material movable on the dies, substantially as described.
It further consists of a movable and stationary die having adj ust-able means, as here inafter described, for controlling the movements of the same.
It further consists of the combination of parts hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a pillmachine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end View of the machine shown in Fig. 1, omitting the hopper carrier or arm. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on line at m, Fig. 1. Fig. t represents a vertical section of the holder or hopper. Fig. 5 represents a horizontal sectional view of hopper and inner ends of the dies on the same plane as in Fig. 3, the dies, however, being farther separated than in said figure. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of a portion of the driving-shaft with the operating-cams thereon. Fig. 7 represents an end View of the hopper carrier or arm with hopper thereon.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a standard or support adapted to be secured to any suitable bed or surface and having journaled in a projecting portion or arm B thereof the driving-shaft O, to which is secured a crank-handle D for rotating the same. Adj ustably secured in an arm E of the standard by means of the adjusting-screw F and the clamping-screw G is a stationary die H. A thumb-nut J 011 the screw F locks the latter in place when adjusted.
K designates a movable die working in bearings in an upwardly-extending portion L of the standard.
The hopper M is secured on a reciprocating bar N by means of a pin P and has the oblique recess Q, leading to a horizontal tubular groove or recess R therein. The inner or adjacent ends of the dies H and K are adapted to fit in said recess R during the movements of the said hopper for a purpose hereinafter explained. To impart reciprocating motion to said bar N, which is supported in the upper part of the portion L of the standard, and thereby to the hopper, one end of the bar is provided with the depending arms T and U, the pair T extending below the center of the shaft 0, which is provided with the cams V and W, the former being adapted to engage with the arms T for advancing the hopper in 6 3 one direction and the latter with the arms U for moving the hopper in the opposite direcion.
Secured to the arm E is a spring-arm X in the path of the handle D and adapted when pressed by the latter to pass between the adjacent ends of the dies, so as to remove the finished pill or tablet.
To advance the movable die K in the hopper, one end thereof is engaged by a cam Y on the shaft 0, and to move it in an opposite direction a spring Z is employed, the said spring being secured to a projection A of the standard and provided with an eye B at one end for its easy manipulation. To adjust the limit of action of the spring, and thereby de termine the size of the space between the ends of the die in the hopper, so as to regulate the weight of the tablet, a lever C is provided, the same being pivoted to the projection A and having one end bearing against the die K and the other end furnished with an adjustable screw D, working in a socket E on said lever and having its point adapted to contact with the standard A. 0
The operation of the machine is as follows: The material of which the tablet or pill is to be formed is fed in the recess Q, resting on the die K. As the shaft 0 is rotated the cams V come in contact with the arms T, advancing the hopper, so that the material is carried to the space between the dies, entering the same. The parts W of the cams W then engage the arms U and move the hopper toward the arm L of the standard until the opening Q in the hopper is moved away from the space between the dies K and 1-1. Part of the cams material held between the ends of the dies into compact form, when the higher part of the cams W on the shaft 0 engage the arms U, so as to move the-hopper toward the arm- The machine as described issimple in char acter, of few parts, and not easily liable to get out of repair, and at the same time is efficient in operation.
Having thus described my invention, What, I claim as 11ew,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pill or tablet machine having a reciprocating' hopper and dies in said hopper, one
of said dies being movable in said hopper and the hopper being movable on the dies, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A pill or tablet machine having a hopper with an attached bar, mechanism for reciprocating said bar and hopper, a stationary die, and a movable die, said dies fitting in a recess or groove in said hopper and said hopper being movable on said dies, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. In apill ortablet machine, a standard, a hopper with a bar having depending arms, and a shaft with cams adapted to engage said arms, so as to impart reciprocating motion to said bar and'hopper, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4. In a pill or tablet machine, a standard, a die movable on said standard, a spring secured to said-standard and bearing against said die, and means, substantially as described, for controlling the play of said spring, said parts being combined substantially as described.
'5. In a pill or tablet machine, a standard,
dies having a space betweentheir adjacent ends, a drivingshaft with an operating-handle, and a spring adapted to be engaged by said handle and forced between said dies, said parts being combined substantially as described.
