To all whom 'it may concern,
Be it known that I, ZENAs P. CANDEE, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punch- Shifting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a new and improved punch shifting device, having more particular reference to mechanism for moving the punch in and out of a position wherein its axis is coincident with that of the die.
It is the object of this invention, among other things, to produce a mechanism of this character so designed as to have the maximum strength and be produced at the minimum cost, as well as composed of the fewest possible parts, that they may be readily replaced when worn, and so combined as to insure a positive and easily operated device.
, To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the punch shifting device, having certain details of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a front view of a machine having my improved attachment connected therewith; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with some of the parts shown in section upon a plane substantially indicated by the line A-B of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of some of the parts, a portion of which are in section upon a plane substantially indicated by the line C-D of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the gate and some of the mechanism connected therewith after the cam bracket and slide bracket have been removed and the slide in its eXtreme left position; Fig. 5 is an inside view of the cam bracket; and Fig. 6 is a view of the punch carrier and sector.
In certain classes of work it is desirable that the punch, after it is withdrawn from the die, should be moved out of alinement therewith, to a position that makes it more accessible for stripping the completed article therefrom and placing new Work thereon, and for various reasons to clear the space above the die. To provide a mechanism that will accomplish this positively, by simple means, composed of few parts, is one of the prime objects of this invention. One class of machinery, wherein this functior of the punch is desirable, is the type of press used for making collapsible tubes, the punch being swung out of alinement with the die to facilitate the stripping of the tube therefrom. rlfhe particular type -of machine shown in the drawings is the form used for collapsible tubes, as above indicated, but this is only one of the many uses to which the invention may be put, and I do not therefore confine myself to such limited use in the enjoyment of this invention.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the frame of the machine, 2'the gate slidably mounted therein and by the caps 8 held against disengagement therefrom, 4 is the crank shaft, 5 the toggle blocks, 6 the connection between the toggle blocks and the crank shaft, 7 the head block, 8 the die block which is secured to the frame 1 by the screws 9, or other preferred means, and within which is mounted the die 10. The gate is given a reciprocatory motion within the frame by the rotation of the crank shaft 4 and through the toggle blocks 5-5, one of which is pivotally connected with the gate and the other to the head block 7 All of the mechanism above described is old in the art and does not constitute any part of my present invention, except in so far as the gate is modified to accommodate my improvements.
Rotatably mounted within the gate 2 is a shaft 11, having a sector 12 thereon between its ends, an arm 13 at one end, and a nut 14 on its opposite end, which nut contacts with a collar 15 that surrounds a reduced portion of the shaft 11 and bears against the upper face of the said gate. This shaft is held in its bearings by a cap 16 and the slide bracket 17, which is secured to the gate.
Fixed in the arm 13 by the screw 18 is the punch holder 19, within which is the punch 20 secured by a nut 21 in al well knowny manner.
Attached to one side ofthe frame 1 is the cam bracket 22, having an arm 23 that overhangs the gate 2, and upon the inside of which are the removable cam plates 24, which are secured so as to leave a cam groove therebetween. A vertical movement for the purposes of adjustment is imparted to the cam bracket 22 by the screws 35-36 impinging against the opposite ends thereof.
Movably mounted With one face against the arm 23 and the slide bracket 17, is the slide 26, having a rack 27 near one end thereof, the teeth of which mesh into those of the sector 12. This slide bracket is connected with the gate 2 by links 28 and 29, which are pivotally secured at one end to the slide 26 by the pintles 30 and to the gate at the opposite end by the screws 31 and 32. This slide has a reciprocatory movement which is transmitted into a rotary movement of the shaft 11 and the punch 2 0 connected therewith through the engagement of the teeth in the rack 27 with those of the sector 12, the extreme positions of the slide being shown in Figs. 1 and 4. This reciprocatory movement is given the slide by the movement of a roll 33 connected with the link 29 Within the cam groove 25 between the cam plates 24. As the gate moves within the frame of the machine, the roll 33 travels through the cam groove 25 and a lreciprocatory movement is imparted to the slide 26, the extent of which is determined by the shape of said cam groove.
In Fig. 2 the punch is shown in its extreme outward position, at which time the gate is near or at the upward limit of its stroke, the slide 26 then being in the position shown in Fig. 1. As the gate moves in the opposite direction the roll 33 travels in the cam groove 25 and moves the slide 26 laterally, at which time thev punch is moved about the axis of the shaft 11 until it assumes the position shown by broken lines 34, in Fig. 3, when the axis of the punch is coincident with that of the die 10. It will be observed that the opposite ends of the cam groove 25 are straight so that during a` portion of the movement of the punch, that is, when nearing the extreme ends of its movement, the punch travels in a straight line without a relative rotary movement, and the extent of this straight movement is determined by the path of the cam itself.
The details of this invention may be modified considerably, from those herein shown, and I therefore do not limit myself' to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention, as set forth in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina mechanism of the character described, the combination with a die; of a gate; a punch; a punch holder movable with said gate and rotatably mounted upon an axis substantially parallel to, but upon one side of the axis of said die; a slide having an operative engagement with a part connected with said punch holder; and means for imparting a reciprocatory movement to said slide.

In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a die; of a movably mounted gate; a slide within said gate and having a movement in a path at substantially a right angle to the path of movement of said gate; a punch; and a punch holder connected with said gate having an operative engagement with said slide whereby a rotary movement is imparted thereto and the axis of said punch is moved into and out of alinement with the axis of said die.
3. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a die; of a gate; means for imparting movement thereto; a punch; a rotarily mounted punch holder movable with said gate about an axis substantially parallel to, but upon one side of the axis of said die; a slide connected with said gate, andhaving an operative engagement with said punch holder; a fixed cam; and an operative engagement between said slide and cam.

In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a gate; means for imparting movement thereto; a punch; a rotarily mounted punch holder movable with said gate about an axis different from that of said punch; a slide having engagement with said punch holder; a link connection between said gate and slide; a cam; and means for operatively connecting said gate with said cam, whereby movement is imparted to said slide in a path at an angle to the path of movement of said gate.

In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a gate; of a punch; a punch holder mounted on and movable with said gate about an axis different from that of said punch; means for imparting a relative movement to said punch holder during the movement of said gate, said means comprising a slide havin a rack thereon that engages the toothed portion of said punch holder; and a cam for operating said slide.

In a mechanism of the character described, the 'combination with a gate; of means for imparting movement thereto; a punch; a punch holder movable with said gate upon an axis different from that of said punch; and means for rotating said punch holder during the movement of said gate, said means comprising a cam, a slide operated by said cam and movable with said gate, and having an operative engagement with said punch holder.

In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a die; of a gate; means for imparting a reciprocatory movement thereto; a punch; a punch holder movable .with said gate and about an axis in a different plane than that of the said die; a slide mounted in said gate and having an intermeshing engagement with said punch holder for rotating Isaid punch holder; a link pivotally connected with said gate and to said slide; a cam; and a member connected with said link in the path of and actuated by said cam for imparting movement to said slide. v
8. In a mechanism of the character described, the combination with a die; of a gate; means for imparting a reciprocatory movement thereto; a punch; a punch holder movable with said gate and about an axis in a dii'erent plane than that of the said die; a slide mounted in said gate and having an intermeshing engagement with said punch holder for rotating said punch holder; a link pivotally connected with said gate and to said slide; a cam; a member` connected with said link in the path of and l actuated by said cam for imparting movement to said slide; and means for adjustably securing said cam whereby the relative point of movement of said slide in relation to said die may be Varied.
9. In mechanism` of the character described, the combination with a die; of a gate; means for imparting movement thereto; a cam; means for adjusting the position of said cam in relation to said die; a rotatably mounted punch holder movable with said gate about an axis substantially parallel with, but upon one side of the axis of said die; a punch connected with said holder; a slide movably mounted in said gate and having an intermeshing engagement with said punch holder; a link having a connection with said gate and said slide; and a member connected with said link in the path of said cam and by its engagement' therewith during the movement of said gate imparting a rocking movement to said punch holder and moving said punch in a circular path so that the axis thereof may be brought into and moved out of a line coincident with the axis of said die.
