TRY-SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
Application led September 12, 1916. Serial No. 119,715.
To all 'to/1,0mz't may concern.' A
Be it known that l, ANTON Fons, a
4citizen of the United States, residing at Royal Oak, in thev county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvementsin, Try-Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to try squares for carpenters use, and it has for its object to produce a simple and efficient tr f square ot' improved construction which will be provided with means, for marking ceiling, flooring and other material that is to he eut in such a manner that the mark will be absolutely plain and ineradicable.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and eiiicient try square including a slidable member and` a marking saw which may be applied to said slidable member for the purpose of marking lumber that is to be cut in certain lengt-hs and at certain angles.
Yith these and other ends in view which will readily appeal' as the nat-ure of theinvent-ion is better undeistood, the same con.- sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointegl out in the claim.
.ln the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,-
Figure 1 is a top proved try square.
Fig. 2 is a bottom Fig. 3 is a top plan View with plate detached.
Fig. 4 is a. transverse sectional view taken on the line 4`4 inv Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a lan view of the square as it a.p pears when t 1e marking device has beendetached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved try square comprises a body portion 15 and a blade 16, the latter being securely attached to the bod portion at a right angle to the same, one side of the body portion being, however, provided .with an plan view of the implan view of the same. the cover The construction shoulder 17 which lies degrees to the blade, thus enabling the try square to be utilized for makingl a straight or a mitering mark.
'lhe blade portion of the device is prcvided with a recess 16 to accommodate a slide 19 having shoulders or osets 20, whereby its movement will be limited, said shoulders being adapted to engage or Contact .vith abutments .17 on the blade at the limits of the movement of the slide. A depression or pocket 18 is formed within the contines of the recess 16. The slide is confined within the recess 18 by means of a detachable cover :21 having a slot :22 through which protrudes a handle 23 that is pivotally connected with the slide for manipulating the saine, so that when not in use the said handle may be folded within the contines of the slot 22. Said handle, therefore, occupies no appreciable space when the device is packed in a Atool chest or other storage place. rlhe longitudi nal outer edge of the slide 19 registers with the outer edge of the blade 16, and connected securely with said outer edge of the slide is a saw blade 24, the same being secured upon the slide by means of a. clamp member and set screws 26. By reciprocating the slide it will be seen that the saw blade may be reciprocated in a line coinciding with the extension forming a at an angle ot' 45 outer edge of the blade 16, it being underi the slide should become. dull or broken.
The cover plate 21 is provided at one corner with a Sharp edged arcuate pro-- jection 27, see Fig. l, which may be utilized for making a mark on the face of the lumber that is to be cut to indicate the line thatis to be marked, thereby avoiding the use of a carpenter-s pencil.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, the operation and advantages oi this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. of the improved device is vey simple and inexpensive. v By properly propol'oulng the parte; the recess 1S may be utilized, u pocket, 01' receptacle in. which alle saw blade and the attaching l'nezzns for the same may be stored when not 111 use.
f ing 'hus descrllxd the invention, what is; @lil-lined :as new, is z- A, try square comprising a body portion, a blade 'havlng 2L recess opening 'through one side thereof onlyD limiting nbui'ments adjooenln to the @mls ol said yecess, :1 slide in said recess having its outer edge in regstrywlth the longitudinal outer edge of the blade and formed with ofsets to engage the abutments in the respective lmts of n'xoven'lent; of the slide, n saw blade mounted Cletacllubly on the edge of the slide, a @over plate secured (lemclmbly on 'the blade to cover the open side of the recess and having a slot, and :L bundle pvoted on the slide and folclable within the confines of the slot.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
