Description

C. EOURTON.
PIPE WRENCH.
APPLICATION men was. 1918.
Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
a tma ntoz Cl & rhcti Col/m ter m 23 P IINIEE SATES EATEN OFFIC,
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. it, 191 8.
Application filed August 3, 1918. Serial No. 248,218.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE COURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smith Center, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved pipe wrench, and has for its object to pro-- vide a pipe wrench which will be convenient in use and durable in wear, and includes certain adjustable features whereby the leverage for the handle may be adjusted. Another object is to provide such a construction that the device may be applied to pipes of greater or lesser diameters with equal fa cility.
The invention consists of the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure l is a front view of the pipe wrench and a part of the chain employed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the pipe wrench, the parts being applied to a pipe. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
Refering now to the drawing for a more particular description, the pipe wrench consists of an elongated head piece l provided with handle 5, these parts being of any suitable siZe or proportion, the parts mentioned, at their junction, preferably forming an obtuse angle for convenience in operation.
The head-member 4, at its free end, is formed convergent from its back to its front to form an edge which will readily engage the convexed wall of a pipe 6, the terminal part or edge of the head member being constructed of metal having sufiicient induridity to prevent cleavage or breakage incident to its use.
'I he upper face of the head-member, preferably, is rectilinear. Numerals 7, 8 and 9 respectively indicate apertures formed in the head-member transversely thereof and parallel with its upper face, these being disposed at longitudinal intervals, each aperture being provided with a link, said links being indicated, respectvely, at 10, 11 and 12.
Links 12 and 11, respectively, are provided with hooks as indicated at 13 and 14. At 15 is indicated a chain which is connected with the link 10, said chain being of any suitable length; and in operation it will be understood that the chain should be wound upon the pipe, at least two-folds, the hook 141: engaging one of the links of the chain, as clearly shown in the drawing, the edge of the head member being in engagement with the pipe, and by pressing downwardly upon the handle the stresses, on account of this leverage, will be directed to the pipe from the chain and head-member to great advantage, to cause a rotation of the pipe.
In some instances it is desirable to use the hook 13 for a removable connection with the chain, depending upon the size of the pipe to be rotated, and either of the hooks may be used nearer to or farther from the fulcrum as found to be convenient.
Among some of the advantages to be derived by use of the invention. it may be stated that the construction is such that any sliding movement of the engaging parts, upon a pipe or cylinder to be rotated, will be practically eliminated. Also it may be used in all instances regardless of the diameter of a member to be rotated, and is particularly of advantage for use in causing a rotation of large pipes or cylinders; and it will be noted that the parts of the device are few, which conduces to economy in manufacture and durability.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. In a pipe-wrench, a head-member having a fiat upper face and provided transversely thereof with apertures substantially parallel with said upper face, said headmember being provided with a handle and having a terminal part formed convergent from its bottom to its upper face, a plurality of links each being mounted in an aperture of the head member, a plurality of hooks each being mounted on a link of the head-member, and a chain for circum-- scribing a pipe or similar object and mount- 1,2ev,eee
ed on a link of the head-member for a rea link and adapted to be engaged by one 1:; movable connection with one of said hooks. of said hooks.
2. In a pipe Wrench, an elongated headin testimony whereof, I have afiixed my member having apertures formed transsignature in presence of two witnesses. Versely therein at longitudinal intervalsand CLARENCE COURTON provided with a handle, links in said apertures, a plurality of hooks, each being Witnesses:
mounted on a link, and a Chain for enoir- An @TTEMANN, cling a pipe, said chain being mounted on G. G. HUToHERsoN.
Qopiee of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, Q.-
