PIPE-WRENCH.

Application filed April 8. 1914. Serial No. 830,455.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUY V. Unwis, citizen character having few parts and which may be readilyapplied to a pipe or detached I therefrom.
A further object is to so form the wrench that it will have a relatively large area of contact with the pipe and will not act to crush the pipe or puncture it.
A further objectis to do away with the necessity of using bushings in order'to adapt the Wrench to pipes of different sizes.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of such simple construction that it'may be readily repaired in case of any breakage, and in which the pipe engaging sections of the Wrench may be made of relatively heavy material so as to stand a great strain.
Other objects will appear in the course f the following description. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a wrench constructed in accordance with myinvention, the jaws being open. Fig. 2 is a like View to Fig. 1 but showing the jaws closed upon a pipe.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen that my improved wrench comprises a handle 2 which is of any ordinary construction and which near one end is recessed as at 3, the outer wall of the recess being definedby a hook lhaving a straight inner face, the end of the handle at the hooked extremity thereof being slightly rounded.
Pivoted to the handle 2 by means of a bolt 5 outward of the T808583. are the spaced links 6. A bolt or rivet 7 passes through the outer ends of these linksand has pivotal .engagement with an arcuate pipe gripping section-S. This pipe gripping section 8 in turn is formed at its extremity with "a perforationvthrough which a pivot bolt or r-ivet 9 passes whereby this arcuate section 8 is connected to a pair of spaced links 10. These spaced links 10 are in turn pivoted by means of a bolt ll to an arcuate pipe gripping section 12, the extremity whereof is recessed as at 13, the outer wall of this recess being defined by a hook 14, the inner face of this hook being straight while the opposite face of the recess 13 is slightly curved so as to fit the face formed on the inner extremity of the. handle 2. The interior faces of the sections 8 and 12 are toothed or otherwise formed so as to secure a thoroughly good grip upon the pipe to which the wrench is and pivotally connected to the handle 2,-
may be readily opened and then caused to embrace the pipe. The hook 4 is then en gaged with the hook 1t and upon a move"- ment of the handle in the direction of the arrow,"-Fig. 2, the two sections 8 and 12 will be drawn toward a position of eccentricity with relation to each other and the two sections will be forced toward each other at the same time.- Of course it will be understood that the sections'S and 12 do not shift into a a position of actual eccentricity because of the presence of the pipe between the sections I which will prevent this movement but-the 8 and 12 will practically contact with the pipe of a given diameter throughout its whole extent and that the strain will be applied to the pipe evenly. One portion of the pipe, therefore, will not be subjected to a greater pressure or greater strain than another portion of the pipe in the same lane. Thus as the strain is equal, there will. be no tendency to crush the pipe or puncture it as is the case where ordinary pipe tongs are used. Itwill further beseen that the curved face 4? on the extremity of the-handle 2 will have'rocking engagement with the curved face of the recess 13 and that the lip or hook 14: will prevent the disengagement of the hook 4 therewith, no matter how great a strain is applied upon the handle.
Of course, it will be understood that I intend to provide sections or jaws 8 and 12 of different sizes and different curvatures to be used with different sized pipe, one set of jaws being readily interchangeable upon the handle with the other set of jaws by simply removing the bolt 5 or the bolt 7 and inserting the set of jaws desired. I thus do away.
with the necessity of using bushings to re: duce the inner diameter of the pipe gripping sections. It is also pointed out that the sections 8 and 12 are relatively heavy and that therefore they 'can not readily break or bend, no matter how great a strain is applied to them. I
My improved wrench can be made very strong without unduly increasing the weight thereof. It is relatively easy to engage the hook at with the hook 14: and this saves considerable time in the use of the wrench. The pipe gripping sections can not punch holes in the pipe as they bind the pipe entirely around and have a good frictional engagement with the pipe. Furthermore, this form of Wrench' does not ruin the pipe by mashing it as do the ordinary tongs at present used, and as they have no movable bushings or dies, there is no danger of losing the bushings.- The greater strain that is placed upon the handle, the
better the hold upon the pipe. There are no chains to break and thereby I eliminate the danger incident to a chain breaking under straini What I claim is:
A wrench including a handle having a recess formed in one side thereof and adjacent one end, the said recess being provided with a concave inner Wall and defining, at its-outer extremity, a hook, the adjacent end face of the handle being transversely curved, a plurality of arcuate pipe gripping sections, links pivotally connecting the sections to each other, and links pivotally connecting one of said sections to thesaid section, the said hooks being provided with straight flat co-acting inner "faces.
