This invention relates to wrenches, and particularly to wrenches designed for unscrewing pipe or screwing up oil cups on machinery and for like p11 The general object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which is very simple, extremely effective, and which is so designed that it will have a large range of application.

A further object is to provide a construction of this character comprising a tubular handle, a chain passing loosely throu h the handle and bent over upon itself to orm a bight, and a collar to which the chain is attachcd, this construction permitting the chain to be drawn out so as to make a bight of any desired diameter within the range of the wrench, and causing the chain to bind with great force upon. the article being turned, when the handle is operated.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, the handle being partly in section; and

eferring to these drawings, it will' be seen that my pipe wrench comprises a tubular handle 10, which ma be made of a piece of pipe of any suitable iameter and length, the pipe being open at opposite ends and preferably being provided with one or more collars 11 and 12 at one end, and a fixed collar 13 having laterally projecting lugs 14. The chain 15 may be of any suitable character but referably is com sed of pairs of spaced links connected y intermediate solid links, the spaced links being concavely curved on their inner ed e faces. The chain extends through the hand e and is provided at its end with a ring 16 whereby the chain may be pulled taut.

Preferably in order to prevent the collar 13 from rotating upon the handle, the handle is provided with a groove and the collar with a lug extending into the groove. Other means may be used to hold the collar fast on the handle.

By mounting the collar 13 on the handle 10 so that the collar may slide longitudinally, it is possible to apply the wrench to elongated objects without the chain acting to cut into the object which would be the case were the bight of the chain extended in a direction transverse to the handle. By this it is meant that the collar may be shifted longitudinally on the handle and the chain may be disposed over a relatively fiat object laid against the handle. Under these circumstances, when the chain is tightened, the chain will bear flat against the exterior face of the object but the chain will not cut into the edges of the object. With my device, the chain may be very readily adjusted, and locked without the necessity of doing anything more than simply dropping the chain, whenthat portion of it pro ecting beyond the free end of the handle 10 will drop down, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and lock the chain from retraction through the handle. The chain may be readily withdrawn from the handle, when desired, and readily adjusted to suit any diameter of pipe or any size of object to which the wrench is to be applied. Furthermore the chain bears upon the object and the extremity of the handle 10 does not bear upon the pipe or other object and thus does not cut it.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A wrench of the character described comprising a tubular handle open at both ends, a collar mounted upon the handle, and a chain attached at one end to the collar and extending entirely through the tubular handle and beyond the free end thereof.

2. A wrench of the character described comprising a tubular handle open at both ends, one end of the handle being provided with a collar forming a stop, a collar mounted on the handle inward of the stop and having outwardly projecting ears, and a chain having one end pivoted between said ears and extending loosely through the handle and beyond the free end thereof.

3. A wrench of the character described comprising a tubular handle open at both ends, a collar attached to one end of the handle and formin a stop, a collar loosely mounted upon the andle and having outwardly projecting ears, and a chain having one end pivoted between said ears and extending loosely through the handle and beyond the free end thereof.

4. A wrench of the character described comprising a tubular handle open at both ends, a collar attached to one end of the handle and forming a sto a collar slidingly mounted upon the handle and having outwardly projecting ears, a chain having one end pivoted between said ears and extending loosely through the handle and beyond the free end thereof, said chain being composed of a plurality of pairs of links, and links connecting said pairs of links, the first named pairs of links having concave edges.
