` or HOUSTON, TEXAS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27 1920.
Application filed February 15, 1919. Serial No. 277,314.
fh all whom t may concern:
Beit known that l, JEDDY D. NIXoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at itlouston, in the county of Harris and lState of Texas, have invented certain new and-useful improvements in Pipe-VVrenChes, of which the following is a speciiication.
rllhis invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in a pi vie wrench.
Une object of the inventionis to provide a wrench of the character described, which has been specially designed for the purpose of screwing together and unscrewing sections of pipe, but which may be used for other similar purposes.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a wrench of the character described, which may be yoperated in either direction, to screw together, or unscrew the pipe without releasing the same from the pipe.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a wrench of the charac ter described, which may be easily applied to the pipe to be turned, and which will securely grip and hold the same without danger of crushing the pipe.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:v
Figurel, is a perspective view, and
Fig. 2, is a plan view of the pipe engaging clamps thereof.
Referring now more particularly to` the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the gures, the numeral i, refers to the handle, to opposite sides of the operative end of which the jaws 2, 2, are secured. Between these `aws .the op osino' arcuate clam1 s 3 3 work. The inner ends of these clamps are provided with the respective oblong slots il, Li, which diverge outwardly, and whose inner sides are formed with the respective bearing 'plates 5, 5, formed of highly tempered metal, to withstand the wear to which they may be subjected. The bearing bolts 6, G, extend through the respective slots 4, 4, and have their ends anchored in the respective jaws 2, 2. The free end of one of the clamps 3, has the outwardly extending catch 7, and the free end of the other clamp has the latch 8 pivoted thereto, and adapted to engage over said catch to hold the clamps together. ln operation, the clamps are secured around the section of pipe to be turned and the latch then engaged over the catch 7, and the wrench then manipulated in the desired direction through the handle 1. The inner sides of the clamps have'the inwardly projecting oblong teeth A.9,which engage with the pipe to prevent the slippage of the wrench thereon. Normally, the inner ends of the clamps are spaced apart, as shown in Fig. 2, but when the handle l, is manipulated, one of the bolts 6, will move t-o the inner end of its slot 4, and the other bolt 6 will operate against the sloping inner side of the other slot, said bolts bearing against the corresponding plates 5, and forcing the inner ends of the clamps 3 together, thus causing said clamps to grip and turn the pipe.
The wrench is released from the pipe by loosening the latch 8 and swinging the clamps apart, and the sides of the jaws 2, have the inwardly turned stops 10, which prevent Said jaws from swinging too far open. ln handling heavy pipe', the wrench will be of considerable weight, and is usually suspended from the derrick by means of a chain which is attached to the rod 11, to which the wrench is secured. The wrench is thus/balanced so as to at all times, be ready for use and so that it may be easily manip ulated and applied `to and released from pipes.
What I claim is:
l. A wrench including a handle, opposing jaws detachably secured to the operative ends thereof, and spaced apart, pipe engaging clamps, one end of each clamp having a sliding bearing between the jaws, a stop carried by the outer edge of each jaw, and means carried by the other ends of the clamps, whereby they may be secured around the pipe to be turned.
2. A wrench including a handle, aws carried by the operative end thereof and spaced apart, pipe engaging clamps, one end of each clamp being fitted between said jaws, and being provided with anoblong slot, bearing bolts whose ends are anchored in the respective jaws, and which extend through the respective slots, a bearing plate, forming one side of, each slot and against which the pins operate, and means carried by the opposite ends of said clamps for securing them around the pipe to be turned. f
3. A pipe wrench including a handle, jaws carried by the operative end thereof and spaced apart, arcuate pipe engaging clamps whose inner faces are provided with detachable engaging teeth, which are spaced apart around the clamps, one end of each clamp being fitted between said jaws and being provided with an oblong slot, inclined from the center aXis of the wrench, bearing bolts extending through said slots, and whose respective ends are anchored in said jaws and means carried by the other ends of said clamps whereby they may be secured around the pipe.
4. A clamp, including a handle, opposing jaws carried by the operative end of said handle and spaced apart, a stop carried by each of said jaws, pipe engaging clamps,
respective clamps, and which extend through the respective slots, means carried by the operative ends of said clamps for securing them around the pipe to be turned, the inner faces of said slots operating against said bolts when the handle is moved in either direction to engage said clamps with the* pipe to be turned.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEDDY D. NIXON.
