which the following is a full, clear, concise,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming `a "part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in yokes.
The object of the invention is to provide an eiicient and relatively cheap yoke for railway draft riggings and which has simple means for detachably connecting the yoke to a standard draw bar.
In the drawing forming a part of this s ecification, Figure 1 is a part side elevation, part longitudinal section of a draw bar and yoke illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal, sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. the draw bar being indicated in outline by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the yoke, the shankv of the draw bar being shown in section. And Fig. 4 is a rear end elevation of the yoke,
In said drawing, 10 denotes a standard draw bar having upper shoulder 11 and lower shoulder 12. The improved yoke, which is designated generally by the reference A, comprises an upper arm 18 having a rear cross piece 14, and an integral hooded forward end; and a lower arm 15. The hooded forward end of the member 13 comprises side walls 16-16, upper wall 17, the atter having a transverse gib or shoulder 18 for cooperation Awith the draw bar shoulder 11, and a lower horizontal wall 19. the latter being separated from the lower face of the draw bar-butt as indicated in the drawing. Thel yoke member 15 is pivotally connected to the lower end of the cross piece 14 as by the pivot pin 20. Substantially the forward half of the yoke member 15 is downwardly oiset relatively tothe rear half as indicated at 21, to thereby permit said yoke member 15 t0 slide forwardly as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. At its forward end, the offset portion 21 of the lower yoke member is provided with an upstanding relatively heavy and strong shoulder 22. lnterposed between said shoulder and the lower shoulder 12 of the draw bar is a right angled block 23 upon which/the draw bar rests and against which the shoulder 12 engages.
With the parts as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, it is apparent that, upon forward movement of the draw bar, the yoke will also be pulled forwardly through the engagement of the shoulders 11 and 18 and the shoulder 12 with the block 23 andthe latter with the shoulder 22 of the lower yoke member. When it is desired to disconnect the draw bar and yoke, it is only necessary to remove the pin 20, whereupon the yoke member 15 may be moved forwardly sutiiciently for' the block 23 to clear theJ lower face of the draw bar butt, and the draw bar may then be lowered to disengage the shoulders 11 and 18.
In the construction illustrated in the drawing, the block .23 is shown as separate from the lyoke member 15, but as will be understood by those skilled in the art, thel lower arm of the yoke may be made so that its upstanding shoulder directly engages the draw bar shoulder provided sufficient clearance is left to let the draw bar fall down after the yoke arm is pulled forwardly.
I claim:
A yoke for railway draft riggings, said.v
yoke comprising a pair of arms detachably connected at their rear ends, one of saidarms having an integral substantially rectangular hood at its forward end. the hood being provided with top. side and bottom walls and a transversely extending upper gib, the other arm being downwardly offset at its forward end and resting on the bottom wall of the hood, said lower arm at its front end being provided with an upstanding' shoulder, means adapted to be interposed between the lower shoulder of the draw bar butt and said shoulder of the lower arm, said means being arranged to support the draw bar butt with its upper shoulder in engagement .with said gib, said lower arm being' slidable forwardly within the hood when detached from the 5 other arm to thereby permit the draw bar butt to fall onto the downwardly offset p0rtion of s'aid lower arm after the latter and said means have been moved forwardly and thas disengage the draw bar butt from said g1In witness that I' claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 5th day of Sept. 1916.
