DRAFT-YOKE FOR RAILWAY-CAR DRAFT-RIGGING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new an useful Improvement in Draft- Yokes for Railwaj, Car Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft yokes for railway car draft rigging.
The object of my invention is to provide an efficient yoke having readily operable means for replacing a draw bar therein.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a draft yoke embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front end view. Fig. 4 illustrates a modification.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 4 indicates the upper limb of the yoke, 5 the lower limb and 6 a preferably integral connecting member joining said limbs at their rear ends. At its forward end, the yoke is OConNoR, a
' provided with a hollow hood 7 which is preferably integral with the upper hmb 4: thereof. The lower limb 5 extends at its forward end within the said hood and is provided with a gib 8 adapted to engage the lower shoulder 9 of the draw bar 10 and likewise the upper limb of the yoke is provided within the hood with a gib 11 adapted to engage the upper shoulder 12 of the draw bar 10. The lower limb 5 is suitably perforated as at the numeral 13 for the passage of a bolt 14, the head 15 thereof in preferable construction being counter-sunk in the upper face of the gib 8. The said bolt is downwardly extended through the lower member 16 of the hood and is provided with a nut 17. The lower member of the hood is also provided with a pair of suitably headed set screws 13-18 threaded therein with their inner end engaging as at 19-19, against the lower face of the limb 5 near its forward end.
The limb 5 is sufiicientlv flexible so that, in connecting a, yoke and draw bar, the operator may, by means of a suitable tool, as a wrench, screw up the nut 17 of the bolt, and thus draw the lower limb 5 downwardly within the hood until the said limb is in a with the wings position such as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Thereupon,
the draw bar is inserted through the for-- Ward opening of the hood and by means of the set screws 18-18, after the nut 17 has been sufficiently unturned, the draw bar and lower limb may be lifted until the upper shoulder of the draw bar is in engagement against the gib' 11 of the upper limb and the lower shoulder 9 of the draw bar is engaged against the gilo 8 of the lower limb 5.
It will be apparent that, through the employment of my invention, the draw bar may be readily removed from the yoke or inserted therein when the occasion requires without disturbing the yoke or the draft ear which may be mounted within the pocket 20 thereof and this quite regardless of the relative height of the yoke and draft sills of a car when the same are assembled as there are no keys, pins, or other physical means of a similar nature to be laterally removed or inserted.
In the modified of the drawings, the hollow head 40 is made in two sections, the upper section being designated by the numeral 41, and the lower by the numeral 42. The upper head section 41 is preferably integral with the upper limb 43 of the yoke and is formed by the upper transverse member 44 and the depending lateral members 45, 45. A gib 46 therein is adapted to engage the upper shoulder of a draw bar, the said draw bar being indicated at the numeral 47. The lower limb 48 of the yoke is movably mountform illustrated in Fig. 4 i
lower limb being provided with a gib 49 to engage the lower shoulder of the draw bar and having a, transverse member 50 extending underneath the draw bar provided with the spaced apart lateral members 51. 51, between which the draw bar is received. The upper section 41 of the head is provided 52, 52, and the lower section 42 of the head is provided with the lateral wings 53, 53, the said upper and lower wings being connected by the bolts 54, 54, which are secured to one of the head sections at one end. as for instance the upper section at 55, and are provided with nuts 56 at their other end. which are mounted in the slots 57 of the wings.
In assembling. the draw bar and yoke,.the yoke head is opened suificiently to permit the insertion of the draw bar, and the lower both upper and lower, may engage the upper and lower shoulders of the draw bar by means of the nuts 56 upon the bolts 54. In disassembling the yoke'and draw-bar, the reverse of this operation is followed. 7 I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a yd're comprising upper and lower arms integrally united at their rear ends, one of said arms being provided with a hood at its forward end, the forward end of the other arm being movably mounted within said hood and normally positioned in operative position, 'and means for moving the free end of the last named arm within the hood from said operating position.
2. In a draft yoke, the combination with a pair of arms, of a hollow hood connected to one of said arms and adapted tonreceive a draw bar therein, the end of the other arm being movable within the hood, screw means for shifting the position of the last named arm, and additional screw means for holding said last named arm inoperative position against accidental displacement. 3. In a draft yoke, the combination with a hollowhood within which is adapted to be received a draw bar butt, of a pair of yoke arms associated with said hood, and
at their rear ends, said arms being with transversely extending shoulders at their forward ends adapted to screw means for separating the forward ends of said yoke arms to thereby permit the hood formed integrally therewith atits forward end, the forward end of the other arm being movable-within the hood, a set screw for maintaining said free end in operative position against accidental displacement, and devices for shifting the position of said free end so as to permit the insertion or withdrawal of a draw bar butt.
5. In a yoke for draft riggings, the combination with a pair of arms integrally united provided engage the upper and lower shoulders of a-draw bar butt, and screw means associated with said yoke arms at their forward ends adapted to separate said ends sufficiently to permit the insertion or withdrawal of the butt between the arms.
