' AUTOMATIC VISE.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, JOSEPH H. GARAND, a citizen of the United States,:residing at De troit, in the county of Wayne and Stateof Michigamhave invented new and useful Im-.
provementsin Automatic Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic- Vises and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the character'stated. which isof simple and durable structureand which is easily and quickly manipulated for clamping and holding an article and for releasing the same. I i a With this obj ect in view the viseincludes a jaw adapted to be fixed to a bench or other support the said jaw having a "depending lug adapted. to extend along the forwar edge of the bench and a sleeve portion which is adapted to extend over the surface of the top of the bench. A bar is slirlnmv o ed in the sleeve portion and carries at its forward end a jaw adapted to cooperate with the above-mentioned fixed jaw for clamping an article. A lever is fulcrumed at the lower end of the lug and is provided at its upper end with a movable pawl adapted to engage between teeth provided at the underside of the bar whereby the said bar is held at an adjusted position. A springpressed stop is located in the path of movement of the pawl and may be projected under the same for holding the pawl in an elevated position and in engagement with the teeth of the bar. A spring is interposed between the lug and the upper portion of the lever and is under tension with a tendency to normally hold the upper end of the lever in a forward position. A cam is pivotally mounted at a point below the movable and to be operated by The lower end of the lever is pivoted to the cam and the cam is provided at its upper edge with teeth adapted to be engaged by'a pawl slidably mounted at the lower portion of the lever whereby the parts are secured at adjusted positions.
'In the accompanying drawing I Figure'l is a side elevation of the vise; Fig. 2 is a front view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view; Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig.1 5 is a fragmentary elevation illustratlng-a slight modification.
The visecomprises a jaw 1 adapted to be fixed upon a bench or other suitable support. The said jaw is provided'at its lower portion with a depending lug 2 adapted to extend down from the top' of the bench. The said jaw 1 is further provided with a sleeve portion .3 which may extend over the uppe surface of the bench.
A bar 4 is slidably mounted in the sleeve 1 and is provided at its under side with 'movably mounted in the upper end of the lever 7 and may engage between the teeth 5 to hold the bar 4 at an adjusted position. A
cam 10 is pivoted at the forward side ofthe lever 7 and may engage under the pawl 9 for raising the same to engagement with the teeth 5. A stop 11 is slidably mounted in the upper portion of the lever 7 and may engage underthe lower end of the shank of Patented Dec. 3, 1918.;
"Application filed'J'une'7, 1918. Serial No. 238,778.
the pawl 9 whereby the said pawlmay be, p
held in an elevated position and in engagement with the teeth 5. A spring 12 is mounted upon the lever 7 and engages the stop 11 and serves to hold the stop in an inner position with relation to the lever 7. Lugs 13 are adapted to be positioned at the lower portion of the bench upon which the vise is'mounted and a cam 14 is pivoted between the said lugs. The cam 14 is provided with a foot extension 15. The cam 14 is provided at its upper edge with teeth 16. A
pawl 17 is slidably mounted upon the lever I 7 and the lower end of the said pawl may engage the teeth 16 whereby the lever 7 may be held at an adjusted position. The lower end of the lever 7 is pivotally connected with the cam 14. a
It is apparent that when the pawl 9 is in engagement with the teeth 5 and the lever 7 is swung by using the cam 14 the bar 4 may be moved longitudinally in v 5 whereby an article may be clamped and supported between the jaws 1 and 6. When it is desired to remove the article from between the jaws 1 and 6 the stop 11 ispulled the sleeve in a forward direction against the tension of the spring 12 whereby the support is removed from under the lower end of the shank of the pawl 9 and the said pawl will fall by gravity in the lever 7 thus releasing the bar 4 and the article which has been reusing the cam 14 and when the article is clamped between the jaws 1 and 6 the pawl 17 is permitted to engage the teeth 16 whereby the article is securely held between the jaws of the Vise,
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a vise of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be easily and quickly manipulated for grasping and holding an article and for releasing the same.
7 Having described the invention what is claimed is '1. YA vise comprising a jaw provided witha sleeve portion, a bar slidably mounted in the sleeve portion, a jaw carried by the bar,
the teeth of the bar, a spring interposed between the upper portion of the leverand the first-mentioned "jaw, a stop mounted upon the lever and adapted to engage under" the pawl for holding the same in engagement with the teeth, means for raising the pawl, a cam pivoted below the jaws, and said lever being pivoted to the cam.
2. A vise comprising fixed and movable jaws, a bar carried by the movable jaw and provided with. teeth, a lever fulcrumed 'to the fixed jaw, a'spring interposed between the lever and the fixed jaw, a pawl carried by the lever and adapted to engage the teeth of the bar, means mounted upon the lever for raising the pawl, a spring-supported stop movably mounted upon the lever and adapted to engage under the pawl for bold ing the same in engagement with the teeth, a cam pivotally mounted below the jaws and provided with teeth, the lower end of the V lever being pivoted to the cam, and a pawl movably mounted upon 5 the lever and en gageable with the teeth of the cam.
' In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. JOSEPH H. GARAND.
