of a-nail, while the nail. is being drawn, a
and also prevent a splintering of the material wherein the nail is held.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing one form of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a perspective showing a modification, parts being broken away.
As shown in Fig. 1, there is depicted a hammer comprising a head 1 and a handle 2 disposed at right angles to the head 1, the head 1 being provided, in alinement with the handle 2, with a prominent outstanding first finger 3, which may be a screw driver. The head 1 is provided at one end with a second finger 4: and with a bifurcated nailpulling claw disposed between the fingers 3 and 1, the claw 5 and the second finger 4 being curved toward the handle 2. The second finger 4 is longer thanthe claw 5, and the claw 5 projects beyond a line AB tangent to the ends of the fingers 3 and 4, whereby the handle 2 may be swung in one direction thereby to elevate the claw 5 with a second finger 1 as a fulcrum, and then be swung in opposite direction with the first finger 3 as a fulcrum, in order to prevent Copies of this patent may be obtained for an undue bending of the nail and to prevent a splintering of the material wherein the nail is held.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, parts hereinbefore described are designated by numerals previously used, with the suffix a. The distinguishing characteristic of the structure shown in Fig. 2 is that the first finger 3 is in the form of a claw.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A hammer comprising a head and a handle disposed at right angles to the head,
the head being provided, in alinemcnt with the handle, with a prominent outstanding first finger, the head being provided at one end with a second finger and with a bifurcated nail-pulling claw disposed between the fingers, the claw and the second finger being curved toward the handle, the second finger being longer than the claw andthe claw projecting beyond a line tangent to the ends of the fingers, whereby the handle may be swung in one direction thereby to elevate the claw with the second finger as a fulcrum and then be swung in an opposite direction with the first finger as a fulcrum, in order to prevent undue bending of a nail and to prevent a splintering of the material wherein the nail is held.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB T. JOHNSON.
