Description

' 1.00am I DEVICE F08 STROPPING SAFETY BAZOBS. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 2|. I917.
Patented Nov. 5, 1918.
9 To aZZ wltom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Low m (loom it fii iii zen of the Umtfl States resuimg et Ben ninggton, in the county of Bennington,
of Vermont have inventeoi a new and useftui Device for Eitropping mafetyflitemrs; and 1? do hereby declare the following to be e :ifoii, clear, anti exact description oi? the invention, such as will enable others skiiieti in the wt to which it apperteins to mete end use the same, This invention is e. device c iesigneci fer holding seiety rezor blades so that they may be stroppeti with 'ifztciiity.
its principei object toprovide it device for pet-teeming: the stroppieg operation that Wiii eneoie both sides of the flitting; e oi? e safety remihimie to be stropperi. W. out the necessity of having to change the time in the he] AJQUiLiM-lt' objec s to provide it simpie but etiieient means 1:01 attaching the bietic in the hoider. i
third. object is to provide :1 pair oi? lOiiS that Wiii siide during" the strokes of the stropping operation but wiii turn at the reversal of each stroke so as to bring the desired edge into contact with the sti'opv A fourth object is to provide, in combination With the bizuie holder e strep support having iongit'l'ldina-i tracks on which the roiis of the holder may siidei Although but one design is shown for the purpose of setting forth this intention, the invention. is not to be limited to this design. The right is reserved to make any changes or alterations that practice may require, so long as such changes or attentions fail Within the scope of the subjoined cieims.

non to keep its iteee underneath arms 4 near their inner ends, the shoulder portions 21 of the studs operating as spacing means to keep the urine in elinement with the feces of the rolls 6. (Janeentrio with the point of oscilletionfthe arms 10 are provided with slots 22 through Wl'llCl the studs 7 pass. These slots permit the oscillation of the arms 10.
The case 23 is designed to contain the blade holder, the recess in the upper face of block 25 end in which the rod 3 rests being designed to prevent the holder from shitting therein. Cover 24: is connected to the case by the hinges 26, the strep support 2'? being positioned longitudinally in the cover and centrally disposed with reference to the Width. Below the strop support the metallic strips 28 are secured, one on each side of the support and running the length of the cover. The strep 29 is held oil-top of its support by having its ends engage under the golre members 30 which have right angled ends at the ends of their legs by which they are attached (by soldering or other menus) to the metallic strips 28.
To perform the sharpening operation the razor blade is attached to the plate 11, so that it will be held thereon by the heads of the studs 15, the end of the blade abutting the pin 19 to keep the blade in position un der the heads of the studs, as previously described. The holder is then pieced so that the yoke l straddles the strep support 27 when the rolls 6 will be in position to slide on. the metallic strips 28- und the blade Will be above the strep. v
On the forward movement the rolls 6 by contact With the metallic strip 28 will tend to turn causing the pins 8 to niovenp'vvurdly carrying with them the oscillating" arms 10., The arms 10'by engagement with the pin 13 operate to turn the plate 11 in e direction the reverse of the direction in which the rolls 6 are moving, thus bringing one edge of the blade against the strop. v Jhen the blade touches the strop further movement of rolls 6 on the oscillating arms 19 is stopped, the
rolls 6 for the rest of the movement sliding alongthe strips 28 end the edge of the blade dragging on the strop. On the return move went the opposite edge of the bin-dc will he brought into contact with the strep as e result of reversed. mover imparted to the rolls 6 end 0S2;
arms 10 by the reversal oi movement imparted to the whole device.
The device may be turned over so as to sharpen edges that were previously uwuy from the strep, the some cycle of operations being performed by the several component parts, whether the blade 16 is facing the strep or whether the plate 11. faces it.
l i hut is claimed is:
1. in a device for sharpening safety razor blades, a yoke having" e handle attached thereto, rollers having integral studs for pivotelly connecting them to the yoke, spertured studs integral with the inner "faces of the rollers, it plate having pins in pivotal engagement wi h the upcrtured studs, oscilleting arms pivotully connected to the yoke, pins on the rollers adapted to engage the os cilluting H1 118, pins on the plate engaging the oscillating" arms, end means for attachthe razor blade to the plate,
2. In a device for sharpening safety razor blades, e yoke having a handle attached thereto, rollers having integral studs for pivotally connecting them to the yoke, apertured studs integral with the inner faces of the rollers, a plate having pins in pivotal engagement with the epertured studs, oscillating arms pivotally connected to the yoke and havingcurved slots which permit the arms to me us without interference from the opertured studs and further having; straight slots profccting substantially at right angles to the curved slots, nson the rollers eclipted torngi age the iight slots on one side of the curved slots, on the plate adapted to engage the straight slots on the other sides of the curved slots, and means for at tuching" the razor blade to the plate.
3. The combination with u li shuped yoke, of a bundle connected thereto, u pair-of rollers having studs on the outer feces and being arranged whereby the studs are axially alined, said studs being axially mounted in beari gs oi? the end portionsof the arms of the yoke, the inner feces of the rollers having studs axially rranged with ouch other and the first studs, the studs of the inner faces of the rollers having depression bourings, a plate provided with axially zilined pins on its opposite ends mounted in the de pression bearings, oscillatory elements pivotelly mounted on the'inner faces of the arms of the yoke, each of said elements having e longitudinally extending elongated slot, and a transversely arranged elongated. sic, right angles to the first slot for the reception of the studs of the inner faces of the rollers, opposite ends of the plate udjiaccnt rncrs having" noisily ulincd i the loo;
engaging tile upper ends of the iorigituoiiname to this specification in the presence of naily extending slots, *Whei'eby as the yoke two subscribing Witnesses.
