While the invention relates generally to improvements in blade sharpeners, it aims primarily to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive, yet an eihcient and desirable device for honing razors. Vith this end complished by reference to the accompanying drawings.

The form of construction herein disclosed may be considered as preferred, and while this construction will be specifically eX- plained, it is to be understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made. l

A pitman 14 is pivoted at one end to the 55 bloc-k 12, said pitman extending longitudi- I nally from said block and being pivoted at 15 to a wheel 16 disposed above one'corner of the ybase 6. This wheel is carried by a shaft 17 rotatably mounted in a bearing 18 "t" upon the upper end of a post 19 which rises rigidly from said base, said shaft being provided with a hand crank 20. Operation of this crank causes the parts 17,-16-,44 to reciprocate the slide block 12. This block carries a holder H for the razorto be honed Y and novel provision is made for reversin said holder at the ends of the carriage bloei strokes, always presenting the razor blade edge foremost toward the stone.
The holder H embodies two elongate spring metal plates 21 having alined hinge knuckles 22 at one longitudinal edge. These knuckles are alined with two rigid upstanding bearing eyes 23 with which the crown of the block 12 is provided, and a rod 24 passes through said knuckles and eyes, therebyl not only pivotally ,connecting the holder H with j the block 12, but hingedly ,connecting the two plates or sections 21 of said holder.
The longitudinal `edges of the plates 21 re mote from the knuckles 22, are provided with additional knuckles 25 for alinelnent with each other when said plates are closed about the shank S of a razor blade B, as seen in Figs. 1 and 4. A rod 26 is then passed through the knuckles 25 to connect the plates 21 with each other and hold them in tight contact with the shank S. Before .this rod can be passed through the knuckles 25, the two plates must ybe inwardly forced land somewhat sprung so that they are placed under such tension as to effectively hold .the shank S.
At one end, the plates 21 are provided with integral ears 27 which project beyondthe plate edges at which the knuckles l25 are `disposed. The two plates :21 are .transversely bowed Vaway `from each other to receive the shank S, and the .ears l27 have a similar .curvature.
These ears are-adapted .to yieldably 'i" grip the handle 7L of the razor when said handle is extended at an angle from the shank S, and upon closing of the holder preparatory to insertion of the rod 26, the ears will longitudinally spring and hence will by their own resiliency serve to tightly hold the razor handle. Preferably, the rod 26 passes between these ears, between the conventional sections of the handle h, and is provided at its outer end with a ring 28 by means of which it may be readily removed and inserted as required.
Extending longitudinally upon the upper edge of the strip 8 and secured thereto by screws or the like 29, is a metal strip 30. The ends of this strip are curved upwardly and inwardly, providing` arms 3l near the ends of the path upon which the holder H is reciprocated. These arms engage the portion of the holder which projects inwardly beond the block 12 and serve to swing said older to reversed position at the ends of the carriage strokes, as will be clear from Fig. 2. Thusjt is insured that upon each stroke imparted to the razor, the edge of the latter shall be foremost upon the honing stone 9, producing the best results.
It will be seen from the foregoing that although the invention is of rather simple and inexpensive construction, it will be eiicient and in every way desirable. On account of these advantages, the details disclosed are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations i may be made as above stated.
Should it be desirable to use the device for honing a safety razor blade, the latter may be held in a suitable holder (not shown) and this holder held in the holder H. i
I claim v L A blade sharpening device comprising a horizontal base provided with a longitudinal rib along its upper side against which to abut one edge of a stone, the upper side of said base having flat areas at opposite sides of said rib, a'carriage block having a fiat lower side rest ing slidably on one of said areas, the other of said areas being adapted to support the aforementioned stone, operating means for said carriage block for effecting reciprocation thereof longitudinally of said base, guiding means for said carriage block, a blade holder pivoted upon said carriage block on an axis transverse to its line of movement, and a onepiece metai strip secured upon and extending ongitudinally of said rib, the ends of said strip being curved upwardly and inwardly for engagement with said blade holder to reverse the latter at the ends of thecarriage block strokes. y

A blade sharpening device comprising a one-piece base block having a flat horizontal uplper side, said base block having a longitu inal undercut groove near one edge opening through said upper side, an elongated carriage block having a fiat horizontal lower side resting slidably upon said flat. upper side of said base block, said carriage block being provided with a longitudinal dove-tail rib slidably received in said undercut groove, a
pitman pivoted to said carriage block and extendin longitudinally thereof toward one end of said base block, a post mounted rigidly on said one end of said base block, handrotated means carried by said post and conalined bearings, a blade holder for engaging a blade edge with said edgetreatingmeans, said holder embodying two sections having hinge knuckles alined with said bearings, and a single rod passing through said knuckles and through said bearings to hingedly connect said holder sections and to pivotally' mount the holder upon the carriage.
4. In a razor Sharpener, a blade holder having means for pivotally connecting it with a carriage, said holder comprising two elongated spring metal plates disposed side by l] side and hinged together along one longitudinal edge, said plates being bowed transversely away from each other to receive the shank of a razor blade and having connecting means on their other longitudinal edges, sai d plates i being provided at one end with integral ears projecting from said other longitudinal edges thereof and adapted to yieldably grip the razor handle when extended at an angle from I the blade shank.
5. In a razor Sharpener, a blade holder having means for ivotally connecting it with a carriage, said) holder comprising two elongated spring metal plates disposed side by side and hinged together along one longii tudinal edge, said plates being bowed transversely away from each other to receive the shank of a razor blade and having knuckles on their other longitudinal edges for alinement with each other, and a rod receivable in 'I'lsaid knuckles for holding the plates closed. said plates being provided at one end with integral ears projecting from said other longitudinal edges thereof and adapted to yieldably grip the razor handle when extended at an angle from the blade shank.
