To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. IsIDoR, a citizen of thc United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Mechanism for Bag-F rames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
- This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in bag-frames; and the present'invention relates, more particularly, to a novel locking attachment for bag-frames, combining with the hinged frame-sections a lock-actuated and haspengaging mechanism, arranged and constructed with a View of dispensing with the additional haspengaging bag-frame fasteners mounted upon the outside of one of the frame sections and operated independently of the main haspengaging lock.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed, as well as an easily actuated and effectively operating hasp-engaging mechanism for bag-frames, combining with the hinged frame-sections, a hasp-engaging lock, and an auxiliary hasp-engaging means, in the form of slides which are actuated simultaneously with the operation of the lock-mechanism, to disengage from their normal holding or locked engagement with an arrangement of auxiliary hasps, and to dispense with the employment of additional bagframe fasteners mounted upon the outside of one of the frame-sections.
Other objects of the invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel locking-attachment for bag-frames hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the linvention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then nally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
rlhe invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top view of a bag-frame, provided with a locking attachment therefor, made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the two bag frame-sections being represented in a partly opened and unlocked relation, so as to show 1n connection therewith the arrangement or disposition of the several haspdugs; and Fig. 2 is a front face view of the framesections and the locking attachment in their closed relation, the usual hinged end-members or portions of the framefsections being represented as being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the outer or main frame-section and the locking attachment connected therewith, the manipulating lock which is employed in con` nection with said frame-section for actuating the said locking attachment being represented in elevation; and Fig. l is a horizontal section of the locking attachment said section being represented as taken on line 4.-4 in said Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow x.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section of the outer or main frame-section and the locking attachment connected therewith, similar to the sectional view represented in said Fig; 3, illustrating the said locking attachment mounted upon the inner face of the frame-section, instead of the outer face thereof as illustrated in Figs. l, 2, 8 and 4 of the drawings.
Fig. 6 is a detail horizontal sectional representation of the one end-portion ofthe casing or shell and one of the hasp-engaging slides disposed therein, showing in connection with the end of the said slide, a different form of spring from that illustrated in Figs. 3, It and 5 of the drawings.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the vsaid above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, it will be seen, that the locking attachment is shown in connection with that class of bag-frames known in the trade as English or sewed-in bag-frames, and while in the following specification I have also described the said attachment mounted upon and used with the frame-sections of this type of bag-frames, it will be understood,
however, that the locking attachment may be attached to and used also with other styles and types of bagframes In the present drawings, the reference characters 1 and 2 indicate the outer members of the respective frame-sections, the frame-section 1 having secured thereto, by means of the usual brackets 3, or other snitable securing means, the usual form of vertically disposed side-member or element 4. In like manner, the frame-section 2 has secured thereto, by means of the usual brackets 5, or other suitable securing means, the usual form of vertically disposed side-member G, the respective leg-members of said side- elements 4 and 6 being operatively connected by means of any usual and well-known hinges, which, however, are not here shown.
Suitably secured to the said side-member or element (5, at desired points, and projecting laterally from the inner faces of said side-element G are a plurality of hasp-lugs, as 7, 8, 9 and 10, each hasp-lug being provided with retaining or holding hooks 11 with beveled ends 12, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and for the purpose to be presently more fully described. Suitably secured upon the inner tace of the side-member or element 4, by means of rivets 13, or other suitable fastening means, is a lock-casing, as 14, containing any suitably constructed and key-operated lock-mechanism.
Connected with the said lock-mechanism and extending in an upward direction therefrom, through an opening in the top-plate 15 of said loclrcasing or shell 14 is a vertically movable key-receiving member or element, as 16, provided with wings 17 which extend on `opposite sides ot said member or element 16, longitudinally with relation to the iframe-section 1. In its front face, the
said loclecasing or shell 14 is provided with a pair of suitably disposed slots or openings, as 18, for entrance into the said casing or shell 14 of the end-portions of the two hasplugs 7 and 8, and the engagement of the retaining or holding hooks 11 of said lugs 7 and 8 with a pair of spring-controlled lockposts 19 and 20 of the usual construction, and with which the said locking mechanism contained in said casing or shell 14 is provided, when the two traine-sections are brought into their closed relation.
Normally, the winged portion of the vertically movable kevreceiving member or element 16 extends into, through and above a suitably shaped opening, as 21, with which the said frame-section 1 is provided, the said wings 17 being each formed with an in clined or chamfered edge, as 22, for the pun poses to be presently more fully described. As shown in the several figures of the drawings, there is suitably secured upon the upper and outer face of said frame-section 1,
by means of rivets 23 and 24, or other suitable fastening means, a longitudinally extending shell or casing, as 25, the said shell or casing 24 being usually open-bottomed, shown, and being provided in its top with an opening 26, see Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, which opening'26 is disposed over the opening 21 in the frame-section 1, and in which the winged portion of the said keyreceiving member or element 16 is also disposed, substantially as shown. Slidably dis posed upon the upper and outer face of the frame-section 1, and within said longitudinally extending shell or casing' are a pair of liat plates or slides, as 27 and 28, the said slides being provided with the respective ehamlered or inclined edge-portions 29 and 30, at all times forced into operative engagement or contact with the inclined or chamtered edges 22 of the respective wings 17, by an arrangement of compressiblc coiled springs, as 31 and 32, located between the end-portions 33 and 84 of the respective plates or slides 27 and 28 and the respective end-walls 35 and 3G of the shell or casing 25, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, or by an arrangement of flat endsprings 37, as represented in Fig. 6 of the drawings. To permit of the slidable ar rangement of the said plates or slides 27 `and 28, the lattervare provided at properlocations with an arrangement of elongated openings or slots, as 38, through which the previously mentioned rivets 23 extend, as shown.
iuitably connected with the respective plates or slides 27 and 28 are downwardly extending hasp-lug engaging posts or elements 89 and 40, which project into and through, and are slidably disposed correspondingly placed elongated openings or slots 41 and 42 withivhich the frame-section 1 is provided, and with which posts or elements 39 and 40 the retaining or holdingl hooks 11 of the respective hasp-lugs 9 and 10 are brought into locked or holding engagement when the two framesections 1 and 2 are brought 'into their closed relation.
Thus, when the locking mechanisms with.- in the lock-casing or shell 14 has not been locked by means of a key, and the framesection 2 is closed within the frame-section 1, the hasp- lugs 7 and 8 will be snapped into holding engagement with the respective lock- posts 19 and 20 of the locking mechanism contained in said casing or shell 14, and the hasp-lugs 9 and 10 will be simultaneously snapped into holding engagement with the posts or elements 39 and 40 of the respective plates or slides 27 and 28.- When it is desired to' bring the ramesections 1 and 2 into their opened relation, the keyreceiving member or element 16 isA suitably depressed whereby the locking mechanism within the lock-casing or shell is also de pressed and 'the vertically movable lockposts 19 and 20 are withdrawnfrom their retaining or holding engagement with the hasp- lugs 7 and 8. At the same time, the inclined or chamfered edges 22 of the wings 17 in their engagement with the. respective inclined or chamfered edge-portions 29 and 30 of the plates or slides 27 and 28will force the said plates or slides in opposite directions toward thev respective ends of the shell or casing 25, against the action of the previously mentioned springs, so that the posts or elements 39 and 40 will also be'withdrawn from their holding or retaining engagement with the respective hasp-lugs 9 and 10, permitting thereby the bag-frame to be opened, as will be clearly evident. As soon as the pressure is removed from the push-post or element 16, the various parts contained in the lock-casing ,or shell 14, as Well as the plates or slides 27 and 28 will again return to their normal initial positions, so that the frame-sections can be closed.
Of course it willbe understood, that the construction of the locking mechanism within the casing or shell 14 is such, so that when a key is inserted in the member or post 16, the mechanism within the casing or shell 14 can be locked against movement, whereby the said member or post 16 is also immovably fixed, so that it can not be depressed, and the said plates or slides 27 and 28 can not be operated.
In lieu of the arrangement of the shell or casing 25, and the devices contained therein, being mounted upon the outer face of the frame-section 1, the said shell or casing 25 may be secured against Vthe inner surface of the said frame-section 1, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. In this case, the haspengaging posts or elements 39 and 40 are slidably disposed in correspondingly placed elongated openings or slots 43 and 44 with which the said shell or casing 25 is provided. An ornamental plate or escutcheon, as 45, provided with a hole or opening 46 in which the winged member or post 17 may extend and move, in the manner heretofore described, may also be secured upon the outer face of the frame-section 1, as shown in said Fig. 5.
In all other respects the arrangements and constructions, as well as the operations, of the several devices and parts are the same as those described in connection with Figs. l to 4 inclusive, and any further description of the same is deemed unnecessary.
Since any known construction of locking mechanism within the lock-casing or shell 14 may be employed it is not deemed necessary to further illustrate and describe any particular construction of locking mechanism in connection with this case.
Of course I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, Well as in the details of the construction o the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a locking mechanism connected with the other frame-section provided with means adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a shell or casing mounted with relation to said last-mentioned frame-section, said shell or casing and said frame-section being provided with registering openings, a vertically movable pushpost connected with said locking mechanism, said push-post extending into and through said registering openings, said push-post being provided with inclined engaging portions, spring-controlled slides disposed in said shell or casing actuated by engagement of said inclined engaging portions therewith when said push-post is depressed, and means connected with said slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.
2. In combination with the frame-section ofv a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a locking mechanism connected with the other frame-section provided with means adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a shell or casing mounted with relation to said last-mentioned frame-section, said shell or casing and said frame-section being provided with registering openings, a vertically movable push-post connected with said locking mechanism, said push-post extending into and through said registering openings, said push-post being provided with inclined engaging portions, spring-controlled slides disposed in said shell or casing actuated by engagement of said inclined engaging portions therewith when said push-post is depressed, and hasp-engaging post extending downwardly from said lides adapted to engage others of said haspugs.
3. In combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a locking mechanism connected with the other frame-section provided with means adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a shell or casing mounted with relation to said last-mentioned frame-section, said shell or casing and said frame-section being provided with registering openings, a vertically movable push-post connected with said locking mechanism, said push-post extending into and through said registering openings, Wings extending on opposite sides of said push-post, said Wings being provided with inclined engaging edges, spring-controlled slides disposed in said shell or casing actuated by engagement of said inelined engaging edges therewith when said push-post is depressed, and means connected with said slides adapted to engage with others of said hasp-lugs.

In Combination with the frame-sections of a bag-frame, hasp-lugs extending from one of said frame-sections, a locking mechaa nisin connected with the other frame-section provided With means adapted to engage with some of said hasp-lugs, a shell or easing mounted With relation to said last-mentioned :traine-section, said shell or easing and said frame-section being provided with registerineaeis or easing actuated by engagementiof said in` @lined engaging edges therewith When said piisli-post is depressed, and hasp-engaging post extending downwardly from said slides* adapted to engage others of said hasp-lugs.`
