TEMPORARY R LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 22, reis.
Application led September 13, 1917. Serial No. 191,164.
To all fwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EMIL HUGO FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, countyof Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Temporary orL'oose-Le'af Binders, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates'to improvements in temporary or loose leaf binders.
.The object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf binder of the pin and follower type which is simpleV in structure, economical to manufacture, andconvenient and` elii- Icient in operation. j
Further objects, and objects relating to `structural details, will definitely appear rfrom the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention 201 by the devices and'means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly` dened and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is apreferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanyingA drawing `forming a part ofthis specification, in .which Figure I is a plan view of my improved binder, portions ofthe covers being broken away.V
`-Fig. vII is an enlarged sectional ydetail Y taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 rrofFigI.
"FigLIIl is` an inverted view ofthe follower, withy the baser bar removed. Fig. IV is a plan View of the base bar, showing the clutch members and spring de- 'tent mounted thereon. n A In the drawing, similar reference characters refer to similar lparts throughout the several views, andthe sectional view is taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section line.
Referring to theg drawing,
pair of binder members,
ally by the numerals 1 and 2. For convenience, these binder membersk will be designated as upper and lower binder members.
vThe binder members illustrated are provided with covers connected thereto by iexible 'hinge members 3 in the k"well-known manner. Bindingposts 4 are secured to the lower member. Y y' y The upper binding'member, comprises a base bar 5 and a channel-shaped housing 6 inverted thereon and secured by means of I` provide a k10 which, in formed of a designated genertongues 7 extending through holes 8 in the ends of the base bar.
I provide a pair of clutch members 9 and the structure illustrated, are flat blade spring 11. This spring is secured to the plate 5 on the base bar 5 by means of rivets 12. The clutch member 10 is provided with a pair of upwardly and inwardly inclined tongues 13. The base bar has slots 14 extending from'65 one edge to receive the posts, while the spring clutch members project slightly Vover these slots to engage the posts.
The housing is provided with slots 15 registering with the slots 14;. A locking bar or 70 lslide 16 is mounted in the housing and provided at one end with outwardly and downwardly inclined cam lingers 17 which engage with the tongues 13 of the clutch member 10 to disengage this clutch member. y7.5 The opposite end of the locking bar is bent upon itself as indicated at 18 and its end is bent inwardly and downwardly to provide an inclined cam member which projects be 4 neath the end of the clutch member 9. 80
The locking Vbar 16is provided with L- shaped slots 19 and 20 adapted to be brought into register with the slots of the binder member.
' The extensions 21 and 23, and 22 and 24; 85 formed bythese L-shaped slots extend across 'and close lthe binder member slots when the locking bar is moved to permit the clutch members to engage and move out of the v. binderk member slots when the locking bar yis shifted to release the clutch members.
A spring detent 25 is secured to one end of the base bar 5 and is provided with a 'leeper 26 engaging the locking bar to hold 1t in adjusted position. A button 27 lis se- 95 cured to the locking bar by means of the shank 28 which projects through the slot in the housing.
In Fig. II the locking bar is shown in., position to permit the clutch members to env gage. When it is desired to release the binding posts the button 27 is moved to- `ward the right whereupon the cam portions of the slide engage beneath the tongue 13.. and on the end of the clutch member 9 lift` 105 ing the clutch members out of clutching relation and opening the slots in the upper binder member so that it Inav be moved laterally from the posts. Having thus described my nventlon, what with said slide to hold it in its adjusted positions.
7. In a binder, the combination of a binder member provided with posts, a clamping member provided with post openings, a clutch spring secured intermediate its ends to said clamping member between said post openings thereof, the ends of the spring c011- stituting clutch members adapted to engage the posts, said spring being provided adjacent one end with an upwardly projecting tongue, and a clutch control slide provided with downwardly inclined cams coacting with one end of said clutch spring and with said tongue on said clutch spring so that 15 both clutch members are actuated by the shifting of said slide.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
