To all whom it may cflmicrn:
Be it known that 1, J MES Bowmron, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 7 1 Maitland road, Islington, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haulage-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices by means of which mining skips and the like are tem-v porarily attached to a traveling hauling rope, and the object of this invention is to provide a device for this purpose affording great facility for attachment to and detachment from the rope, the locking and unlocking of the rope-gripping jaws being effected by one movement of a lever.
The device forming the subject of this invention comprises a plate of metal having usual or other known and suitable means of attachment to the skip, bent at its lower end to form one of a pair of gripping jaws, and to the lower extremity of the same is hinged a plate constituting the other member of said jaws and adapted to fold upwardly to grip the rope or swing downwardly to release the same.
The locking of the swinging jaw is effected by a cam device attached to the main plate and adapted to engage the said swinging jaw and constructed to give immediate release on reversal-of the operating lever.
The accompanying drawings depict haulage clip construction in accordance with this invention and in them Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device locked on a rope and showing means for attachment to a skip.

The main plate 8 has in its flat portion a hole 9 adapted to receive the link 10 or other suitable means for attaching the device to a skip, and the lower portion of the said plate is bent to form a gripping jaw 11 while extending from the lower edge of said. jaw is a hinge-lug 12.
The complementary swinging jaw 13 is oppositely curved so that the rope is may be securely gripped, andto. add to the se entity the jaws are preferably slightly curved longitudinally on their inner faces as shown in Fig. 6 so that the rope is not only gripped'butis slightly bent; and said jaw 13 is hinged to the other jaw by pin 15 passing throughlugs 16. 16. and 12. From the swinging edge of the jaw 13 extends a lug 17 adapted to pass through an aperture 18 in the main plate and having an up ward ofiset 19 adapted to be engaged to lock the jaws by the spiral cam surface 20 on boss 21 on pin 22 passing through the main plate and rotatable by means of the' operating handle or lever 23.
The boss 21 and cam surface 20 are gapped as at 24 to permit the passage of the ofiset 19 of the lug 17 as in closing the device (or its withdrawal) when the operatin lever is in one extreme position against t e stop pin 25 as in Fig. 3, it being noted that the disposition of the swinging jaw 13 is such that when not locked it will automatically fall outwardly and downwardly to release the rope until the stop pin 26 prevents further movementsee dotted lines in Fig. 2.

What I claim as my invention is 1. A clamping device, comprising a pair of hinged gripping members having opposed gripping surfaces immediately adjacent the hinged ends thereof, one of said members having an aperture spaced from the hinged end thereof, said gripping surfaces lying between the aperture and the hinge, a lateral projection on the other member which in the open position is spaced from the adjacent side of the first member and in the closed position extends through the aperture in the first member from said adjacent side of said member to the other side thereof, and a cam member movable between the last mentioned side of the first member and the adjace-nt face of said projection to force 'the projection away from the memloer and said gripping surfaces toward each other.
2. A clamping device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cam member is mounted on the first hinged member and is rotatable in a plane parallel with the surface of said member, said cam having a spiral surface engaging the adjacent face of the projection.
3. A clamping device, comprising a pair of hinged gripping members having opposed gripping surfaces immediately adjacent the hinged ends thereof and having portions beyond said surfaces extending latorally toward and across each other, and a cam member movable between the adjacent faces of said crossing portions to separate the same and to move said gripping surfaces toward each other.

5. A clamping device comprising a pair of hinged gripping members and a cam member mounted on one of said gripping members and movable to force the other gripping member about said hinge toward the. first member, said gripping members having opposed grooves which are curved in the direction of the length thereof to form a curved passage for the haulage rope, having its intermediate portion out of line with its end portions for the purpose described.
