Description

L. a 11. SLINGER.
Improvement in Gates.
Patented June 18 Inventor.
Attorneys. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI SLIN GER AND DAVID SLINGER, OF OARMI, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT m GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,183, dated June 18,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEVI SLINGER and DAVID SLINGER, of Oarini, in the county of \Vhite and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable gate to be used on level or inclined ground, as may be desired.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a front .view of our gate.
vertical bar B at the outer end of the gate, as shown. To the vertical bar at the inner end of the gate, and on the same side as the brace D, is pivot-ed a lever, G, which passes along the side of the gate, resting upon the upper end of the brace G, and guided or confined by the upper end of the brace D. On the under side of this lever are a series of teeth, as shown.
By taking hold of the outer end of the gate this end can be raised, which raises the brace O and lever G, the lever falling down on said brace, so that the upper end of the same will catch in the teeth on the lever, thus holding the gate at any desired angle to suit the ground on which it is used.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a gate, AB, the braces G (J and D, and the toothed lever Gr, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 3d day of Witnesses:
J AS. T. R. BOZEMAN, COLIN L. MOVICAR.
