Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
LEVI W. FIFIELD, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM H. HATHORNE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHINGLING AND SLATING`BRACKETS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,875, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI W. FIFIELD, of /Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and Sta-te oi' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shingling-Brackets; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part .of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an adjustable shingling and slating-bracket, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.`
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal Vertical section, showing the bracket open; and Fig. 2 is a side View, showing it closed.
A represents a toothed jaw, made pointed so as to be pushed under the shingle easily. It extends beyond the end of the upper jaw B, to which it is attached by moans of a screw, C, as shown. This upper jaw B is connected with toothed foot D by means of hoop-iron E, or anything else that will allow it to be adjusted, or rather adjust itself to any unevenness of the roof. On top of the upper jaw B are ears a a, between which the wooden bar G is pivoted, forming a hinge to adjust to any angle of roof, and to allow of the bracket being folded for transportation, 85o. To the outer end of this horizontal'bar G is pivoted a yoke, b, which works into notches upon the upright bar H to hold it in proper position, said upright bar being pivoted between ears d d on top of the foot D.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described adjustable shingling and slating-bracket, consisting of the toothed jaw A, head B, foot D, hoop-iron E,`bar Gr with yoke b, and the notched bar H, when all of said parts are .constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. LEVI W. FIFIELD.
Witnesses SAMUEL SMITH, WoonBUnr G. SMITH.
