LOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed September 10, 1917, Serial No. 190,597. Renewed May 25, 1918. Serial No. 236,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER L. DENMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Coles and State of Illin'ois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in looking devices and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a pedal or other movable member, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which serves effectually to prevent movement of a pedal or other member in one direction and which assumes an operative engagement with said pedal or member in an automatic manner.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved locking device wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating a locking device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of my improved locking device as herein disclosed; and
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the work ing edge of my improved device as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing S denotes a standard generally employed in connection with shoemakers stands and which is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 1 in which works the pedal P generally employed for controlling the action of the holding straps used in connection with shoemakers stands for maintaining the shoe in applied position upon a last,
My improved holding device comprises an elongated flat member M having one edge disposed substantially on a curvature and which edge is provided with a plurality of longitudinally disposed teeth 2 and wherein said teeth are arranged on different angles relative to the longitudinal axis of the memher 1. It is also to be noted that the upper edges 3 of the teeth 2 are downwardly inclined relative to the lower edges 4: for a purpose which will hereinafter be more par ticularly referred to.
The upper end portion of the member M is of gradually increasing width as indicated at 5 to afford additional weight and said upper end portion of the member M in close proximity to the curved or toothed edge thereof is provided with an opening 6 to afiord means whereby the member M may be pivotally engaged with the pintle or supporting member 7 suitably engaged with the standard S.
The member M is applied in a position in close proximity to the slot 1 so that the weight of the member will cause the same to assume by gravity a position whereby the teeth 2 of the member overlie the slot 1 so that said teeth may be readily engaged with the pedal P as the same is depressed. The upper inclined edges 3 of the teeth permit a ready downward movement of the pedal P while the lower edges 4 of the teeth serve to prevent upward movement of the pedal. When it is desired to release the member M from the pedal P it is only necessary that the pedal be given a sudden downward movement which will result in the member M swinging in a direction away from the slot 1 and which permits the pedal P to move up wardly before the member M returns to its normal position as assured by gravity.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a locking device constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the principle and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: I In combination With a support provided With a Vertically directed slot; a member disposed through said slot and movable 1011;- gitudinally thereof, a locking member pivotally engaged at its upper end portion with thesnpp'ort'and'haviiigone edge toothed for longitudinal portion of the slot, the pivoted end portion of the member at the side of 5 the pivotal'co nne'ction" remote from the slot being-v of increased Width to facilitate the maintenance of the locking member in its normal position. i V
In testimony whereof I hereuntdaflix my 20 signature iifthe presence oftwo Witnesses.
