v"Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. November 8, 1912. Serial. No. 730,166.
Patented May 5, ieri.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH EARL LEON- ARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cedar'Rapids, inthe county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -inStove- Key-Plate Ratchet-Supports, of` which following is a specification. Y
Wy invention is an improvement in stove top plate ratchet supports, and has forits object a device .of the character specified, designed to overcome the objections to the ordinary support of this character, andV` wherein means is provided for supporting the plate in a variety of adjustments, auto-V natically operating by the movement of the p ate.
In the drawings: Figure l is a plan view of a portion ofa stove provided with the improved support; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support'detached; Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section; Fig. 4 is a front view of the ratchet bar; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the plate lifted.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a substantially triangular plate 1,
, having a plurality of openings 2, three in the present instance, through which may be passed screw bolts 4 for securing the support to the top plate 5. v
The plate 1 is provided with an angular arm 6 extending from the apex thereof, parallel with one side, and offset laterally from the said side. The said arm is approximately cross shape in section, and near its end the arm is cut away at each side to form a head 7 connected to the arm by a reduced portion 8. A bearing lug 9 having a transverse perforation is secured to the casing 11 kof the stove, by means of screw bolts 12 passing through a base plate 13 integral with the bearing lug, and a ratchet bar 14 is pivoted to the lug. The ratchet bar isprovided at its upper end with a' pair of laterally spaced perforated ears 15, fitting on opposite sides of the bearing lug, and a rivet 16 is passed Vthrough the ears and the lug for pivotally connecting' the ratchet bar to the bearing lug'. The ratchet bar `is `longitudinally slotted, asv shown at 17, and the slot is enlarged laterally at each end, as shown at 18 and 19 respectively. The enlargements'lS and 19 are for the purpose of permitting the passage of the head 7 of the arm (i, and the reduced portion 8 of the saidl arm is capable of moving in the slot 17. On the opposite side from. the support, the ratchet bar is provided,v with a series of notches 20, three in the present instance, for engagement by the liead7, as shown in Fig. 3, and the notches are shaped to fit the head, as clearly shown in the said ligure. ,Y v i In operation, the ratchet bar depends ver tically from the bearing lug, and the arm G is so arrangedl with respect to the plate 1, that when the top platei's in normal position, the head 7 Vof. the arm will be in position to engage and pass through the opening 1S of the ratchet bar. The top plate is lifted by the usual lid lifter, not shown, engaging the usual lifter hole 2l, and it willbe evident that when the plate is lifted, the arm 6 will swing downwardly and the head 7 will come into position to engage one of the notches 2OV of the ratchet bar. Vhen the arm 6 is in the position designated by Il, Ythe ratchet bar will support the plate in this position, and in like manner the plate will be supported in the position III. Vhen, however, the arm is in the position designated IV, the ratchet bar will disengage from the arm, since the head 7 is at the enlargement 19. W'hen the top plate is dropped back into normal position designated I, the arm 6 will push the ratchet bar intol the dotted line position designated V and the head 7 will pass through the enlargement 18, permitting the ratchet bar to drop into the full line position of F ig.l 3.
I claim:
l. The combination with the stove and the movable top plate, of a ratchet bar having. a longitudinal slot pivoted tothe frame of the stove and depending therefrom, said slot being enlarged laterally at each end,
and the said bar having ratchet teeth on its rear face, said teeth facing the lower end of the bar, an arm having means at one end whereby it may be secured to the said top plate and extending toward the ratchet bar, said arm being reduced laterally near its outer end to form a head connected to the arm by a reduced portion, said head being adapted to pass through the enlargements at the ends of the slot and to engage 1 the ratchet teeth, the reduced portion of the arm moving in the slot.
" 2. The: combina tion with the stove and the movable top plate, of a ratchet bar having a longitudinal slot pivoted to the frame of the stove and depending therefrom, said slot being enlarged laterallyat eachend, and
the said bar having ratchet teeth on its rear face, said teeth facing the lower end 0i' the bar, an arm secured at one end to the said top plate and extending toward the ratchet bar, said arm being reduced 1 at ernlly near its outer end to ferm a head connected to the arm by a lateralb7 reduced portion, said head being adapted to pass through the enlargements at the ends of the slot and to engage the ratchet teeth.
The Combination with the stove top und the moval'ile top plate, off a ratchet bar pivoted to the stove top and depending therefrom, an arm rigid with the movable top plate and having at its free end a cross head7 the ratchet bar having a longitudr nelly extending slet provided at each end with an enlargement for permitting the passage of the head and having stops on the opposite face from the movable top plate for engagement by the cross head to support the top plate in adjusted position.
