A TTOR/VEY W1 TNESES AXEL JOHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1918.
Application filed December 26, 1917. Serial No. 208,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL J OHNSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stretchers and more particularly to that type of stretcher that may be employed for moving patients or invalids from the battlefield to the hospital or from one place to another generally without the necessity of lifting them from the sheet. A further object is to provide a stretcher of simple but durable construction that is cheap to manufacture and thatis efiicient in use. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved stretcher.
Fig. 2 is a view elevation.
Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view, broken, of one of the supporting straps employed.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is modified form times employed.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I provide the customary sheet 1 which may be made of any suitable material and to which I secure a plurality of transverse strips 2, the lateral edges of said strips 2 being sewed or otherwise suitably secured to the sheet 1 and the central portion of each strip 2 spaced away of the stretcher in side a fragmentary view of a slightly of supporting strap some- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the from the sheet 1 to receive a supporting strap 3, the ends of said straps 3 being adapted to pass about the side bars 4: and to then be releasably secured to the body portions of the straps as will now be described. Each strap may have a tongue 6 cut in each of its ends and suitably spaced from each tongue 6 a slot 7 is cut to receive the tongues 6 after the end of the straps have been passe about the bars 4 whereby said straps are releasably secured to said bars as clearly shown in Fig. 3; in Fig. 6 the ends of the straps are formed with the slots 8 whereby a terminal tongue 9 is formed, and spaced from the slots 10 which are adapted to receive the prongs formed at the junction of the tongue 9 and strap 3 when the ends of said strap are passed about the bars 4. By withdrawing the tongues 6 or 9 from their respective slots 7 and 10 the bars 4 are released and the straps 3 withdrawn fromthe strips 2.
What is claimed is 1. In a stretcher, a sheet, transverse strips having their edges secured to said sheet and their body portions spaced away therefrom, side bars, straps passing between said sheet and said transverse strips, the ends of said straps being'adapted to pass about said side bars, and means whereby said straps and side bars may be releasably secured together.
2. In a stretcher, a sheet, transverse strips having their edges secured to said sheet and their body portions spaced away therefrom, side bars, slotted straps passing between said sheet and said transverse strips, the ends of said straps being adapted to be passed about said side bars, and tongues formed in the ends of said straps for removable insertion in the slots of said straps.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- AXEL JOHNSON.
