Description

E. McCOY".
Improvement in Washing-Machines.
Patenied June 18, 1872.
UNITED STATES EZRA MCCOY, OF PONTIAC, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,053, dated J line 18, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, invented by EZRA MCCOY, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan.
Figure 1 is a detail sectional view of my improved washing-machine taken through the line w a, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the tub and bottom rubber. Fig. 3 is. a bottom view of the pegged or bottom rubber. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1.

My invention has forits object to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, convenient in use, and effective in operation; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents an ordinary wash-tub, in the bottom of which is placed a block, B, in the edges of which are inserted radial bars C of such a length as to extend to the sides of the tub. D is a cross-bar of a length a little greater than the diameter of the tub A. In the end parts of the bar D are formed slots in which are placed the upper ends of the springbars E, which extend down along the inner surface of the sides of the tub. E are springbars which extend down along the outer surface of the sides of the tub A. The upper ends of the spring-bars F are made with a shoulder upon their inner sides of about the same thickness as the sides of the tub, and are inserted in the slots of the cross-bar D, at the outer sides of the spring-bars E. The ends of the spring-bars E F are secured in the slots of the cross-bar D by wedges G, as shown in- Figs.1 and 4. The inner spring-bars E are slotted longitudinally to receive tcnons formed upon the ends of the cross-bar H, so that the device'may be firmly secured in and to the tub A by pressing the said bar H downward, crowding the spring-bars E against the sides of the tub A. I are two wide bars crossing each other at right angles in the center of the tub, and to the under sides of which are attached a number of knobs or rounded pegs, J In the cross-bars I at their point of intersection is formed a square hole to receive the squared lower end of the shaft L, which passes up through holes in the center of the crossbars H and D, and to its upper end is attached a cross-bar or lever, M, for operating the machine. The shaft L fits loosely in the crossbars D H, and in the pegged or knobbed rubber I J, so that it can be readily raised to allow the clothes to be conveniently put in and taken out.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The framework composed of the slotted cross-bar D, inner slotted spring-bars E, outer spring-bars F, wedges Cr, and locking erossbar H, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it to receive the operating partsof the machine,
as set forth.
