J. EUR'I HoLMEs, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUPPORTS FOR C ANOPIES, CURTAINS, ac.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,041, dated June 18, 1872.
and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of the device illus- Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. j
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to a device to be secured to a bedstead or elsewhere for supporting or suspending a canopy, curtain, or other covering. It consists in so constructing the cross-piece or arm from which the article depends that the weight thereof will be but partially sustained at the joint between said arm or cross-piece and its standard, and is also distributed over the latter, whereby the said cross-piece is firmly held extended in place without liability to breakage or weakening of the joint. It. also consists in the combination of parts to form an adjustable support.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a bracket, which is to be secured to any proper part of a bedstead, other piece of furniture, or elsewhere, and on or through said bracket slides a standard, B C represents a crosspiece, which is adapted to be supported horizontally or obliquely on the standard B. The standard is provided with a series of openings, so as to be adjustable on the bracket, and will be held in place by means of a pin or bolt passing through the bracket and standard. It should be of sucient length to properly elevate the canopy, curtain, tent, or other of metal or other material bent or formed inA to shape to conform to that of the cross-piece and hinged to the top of the standard, and, while Asaid retainer permits longitudinal move ments of the cross-piece, the latter is firmly held on the standard and prevented from displacement. A tongue and groove, respective 1y, may, however, be formed in the standard and cross-piece to accomplish the same result. The end of the cross-piece may have a tongue, G, which enters a slot, a, in the standard, and by means of a screw, bolt, or other fastening, H, passing through the standard and tongue, the cross-piece is fixed in position. A series its upper end, so that the end of the crosspiece which is attached to the standard may be raised and lowered, whereby the end of the cross-piece which supports the article to be elevated may be correspondingly raised p and lowered. In this operation the cross-piece mustbe moved longitudinally on its point of bearing, so that the attachment or fasteningbolt H may be introduced in such of the openings b in the standard as will elevate or lower the free end of the cross-piece. This adjustment .will be found useful in cases where the bedstead or other piece of furniture or place of attachment of the support is low and the ceiling high, and vice versa.
It will be seen that the connection between the cross-piece and standard is strong and reliable, and overcomes the weak joint usual in angular arms employed for purposes similar to mine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cross-piece C continued beyond its bearing. on the standard B, and having its end secured to said standard at some point of the length of the latter, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The adjustable standard B, adjustable cross-piece C, and the retainer F, combined and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
The above signed by me this 18th day of May, 1872.
