To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmoW l-fihat 'I, CARLJP .EDWARDSEN,
a citizen of the United States, residingi at" Stratford, in the county of Brown and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Renewal-Points for Worn Plowshares, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in renewal points for worn plowshares and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved point which serves to materially prolong the life of the share.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved point whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise 7 more convenient and advantageous for use,
all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. a
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention maybe the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in bottom-plan of a plow share having a point applied thereto in accordance with an embodiment of myv invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation at the landside of the plow share as herein embodied.
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the point in its initial formation;
Fig. 4: is a view in plan of a blank or bar from which a point may be cut; and
Fig. '5 is a bottom plan view of the point after an end portion has been drawn.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, P denotes a plow share of conventional type including the landside 1.
The body A of the point is welded to the bottom or under face of the share and is initially substantially diamond-shape in form as indicated in Fig. 3. By having the body A of this particular configuration it will be at once self-evident that a plurality of these points may be out from a bar of material without waste.
The body A when initially cut is substan- RENEWAL-POINT ronwonnrrowsnhansk.
Specification of Letters Patent; l Patentedtflct. 1; 1918 l W the same thickness at "all points,
and an end portion2 thereof or that portion .in advance of the transverse dotted liiie a is drawn out to afi'ord a substantially V- shaped extension so as to properly conform to the portion of the plow share with which it coacts. It has also been found of material advantage to provide the rear portion of the point A at the land side thereof and to one side of the extension 2 with the rearwardly directed heel b' as the additional metal aiforded thereby materially facilitates the welding of the point to the land side of the share and which land side also becomes worn as well as the point of the share proper. The point is intended to be marketed in this condition and when applied is adapted to be welded to the plow share with the portion of the point A in advance of the drawn portion 2, which will be substantially flush with the lower edge of the landside 1, and which results in prolonged life of the share and causes the same to hold bet- .finally the point is'finished in such a manner as to cause the same to have the appearance of being integral with the plow share P. It will also be understood that by drawing out the forward portion of the body A after said point has been welded to the plow share, the possibility of burning the point is eliminated, and which would be likely to occur if the forward portion of the body A. were drawn out before the point was welded to the share.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that renewal points for worn plowshares constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly 'well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish tobe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the inclined and substantially V-shaped extension, the body portion of the point adjacent the land side of the extension being provided With a heel, said point, extension and In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
I H CARL JOHN EDWARDSEN. Witnesses:
E. W. RADEKE,
E. S. JOHNSON.
