SPOON. APPLICATION FILED JUNEZZ. 19121.

SPOON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application filed June 22,1918. Serial No. 241,400.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known that I, DINK FITZGERALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Dorado, in the county of Union and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spoons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved spoon especially adapted for use as a medicine spoon or measuring spoon, to enable medicine or the like to be accurately measured by the spoonful and to be also readily administered to a child or to a weak patient, the object of the invention being to provide a spoon embodying a cover and means to open or close the cover and to hold the cover tightly when closed so that the cover serves to prevent the contents of the spoon from spilling.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
I11 the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a spoon constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the same with the cover in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The spoon bowl 1 may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form, and may be of any suitable size such as a teaspoon or the like and is provided with a handle 2 which is formed integrally with a reversely turned spring 3. The spring is provided near its free end with a slot 4.
I also provide a cover 5 for the spoon which is adapted to fit and close snugly Copies of this patent may be obtained for thereon to prevent the contents of the spoon from spilling. The cover may be hollow in the under side and rounded on the upper side as here shown, or may be flat, or of any other suitable construction. At the inner end of the cover is an arm 6 which is bent therefrom and which is formed at the outer end with a downwardly turned ton no 7 which operates in the slot 4. of the spring 3, said tongue having stop shoulders 8. The arm 6 is also provided with lugs 9 which bear against similar lugs 10 with which the spoon handle is provided. The said lugs 9, 10 have registering openings in which eyelets 11 are fitted, the eyelets forming pivotal connections between the lugs 9, 10 and providing a clear space for the movement of the free end of the spring 3. The said spring coacts with the downturned tongue end of the cover arm to normally hold the cover in tightly closed position on the spoon. When it is desired to open the cover this may be eiiected by pressing downwardly on the spring, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In combination with a spoon having a handle provided with a reversely turned spring and also provided with a pair of lugs at opposite sides and between which the free end of the spring is arranged to operate, a cover for the spoon having an arm provided with lugs pivotally connected to the first named lugs and also provided with a tongue arranged at one side of the pivot axis, the said spring arm having a slot in which said tongue operates, said tongue being provided with stop shoulders at its ends.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
DINK FITZGERALD.
