PAPER FASTENING DEVICE. v "AP1PL ICATION FILED DEC. 3. 1911.
Patented Sept. 17, 1918,
INVENTOR JOHN Mumm/ MM 7- arm (:76
nae.
i STA JOHN MURRAY, 0]? EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.
PAPER-FASTENING DEVICE.
Application filed December 3, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MURRAY, a-subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fastening Devices, of which the following is the specification.
The invention has for its object to provide simple and effective means for securing together temporarily or otherwise loose sheets of letterpress or the like by way of apertures pierced in the sheets and such as to maintain alinement of the sheets and also permit of the securing of them together or of the securing upon them of a temporary cover. The improved devices are of particular advantage as a means for the preliminary securing of the pamphlet-s or parts in connection with the loose-leaf binder which forms the subject-matter of my prior Patent No. 1,243,544.
A fastening device made according to the invention comprises a tubular body part adapted to fit within the apertures (of which there are of course two or more) in the sheets, and lug parts extending preferably diametrally and axially from the ends thereofwhich lug parts are finally folded over upon the sheets havingv first been pressed through the temporary coverif there be such. The lugged tubular fastener is formed from a rectangular blank of thin sheet metal or other suitable material the width of which is substantially equal to the thickness of the block of sheets it is desired to secure,
while its length is approximately equal.
jointly to the circui'nference and diameter of the apertures in the sheets. At one end and at opposite sides of this rectangular blank there outstand the lugs before referred to, which lugs are rather less in width than the diameter of the apertures and are of a gs. 3 and A of the drawings Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 1'7, 1918.
Serial No. 205,203.
ture in a series of loose leaves, and lug parts B, C extending diametrally and axially from its length is approximately equal jointly to the circumference and diameter of the aperture in the sheets. At one end and atopposite sides of this rectangular blank D there outstand the lugs B, C, hereinbefore referred to. These lugs are rather less in width than the diameter of the aperture and are of a length adequate for convenient folding over.
It will be seen that the improved fastener very effectively binds together a series of loose leaves, and it may be a cover, in suchwise that while cover and leaves may be readily removed the whole can be freely handled without fear of their inadvertent detachment.
What I claim is 1. A fastener of the type described comprising a tubular body having lugs projecting from the ends thereof.
2. A fastener of the type described comorising a tubular body having lugs projecting axially from the ends thereof, and substantially corresponding in width to the diameter of the tubularbody.
3. A fastener of the type described comprising a tubular body. with internal web projecting beyond the ends of the tubular body to form lugs for the purpose specified.
4:. A blank for a fastener of the type de- 7 name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN MURRAY.
